Aluminum heads

I was reading a book about Mercury trucks and it said that their version of the 239ci flathead had aluminum heads. Is this true, and if so why did they use 2 different type of heads on that engine.

Ford used aluminum heads for years on the Flathead V-8's. Anyways you could get aluminum heads on the 48-49 Mercury trucks but I think they were optional since I haven't seen any on all the truck's I've seen.
