New turbo noise, that doesn't sound good.

Just got back from a short 120 mile round trip to Glenwood Springs, and this new noise has surfaced.

Curious if anyone else has heard a very loud howling noise from the turbo as it spins down off boost. It makes the same noise every time, seemingly at the same RPM, and some times as I get back on the throttle there is no boost for a bit, then it kinda picks up and goes. I haven't had the chance to pull the intake and look at the compressor side, hoping the shaft hasn't gone out of balance or some thing worse.

Black Widow might be selling an IC/turbo combo soon depending on what I find.

Thanks again for any input in advance ladies(albeit few) & gentlemen...

I dont know if this helps but our unit last night did the same thing I was wondering. Does it seem like it kinda slows down the shifting to? This was on a 6.0 though. I cant help you with what causes it.

Look for a chipped intake wheel.

Just got done pulling the intake so I could get a good look at the compressor.

The wheel isn't chipped, all the fins look good. The drive shaft is solid with no noticeable play. If I really look super closely and carefully, it looks like the fins have worn against the housing ever so slightly. Some fins more than others. I ran my finger around the housing and you can't even feel any abrasion marks on the housing. It seems so insignificant, but, is that possibly the cause of the noise and occasional stumble? This is scary since it is the intake...

If there is any damage at all, visible by eye, the turbo should be replaced, or rebuilt. That noise is screaming at you. Ignore it and pay the price, or bite the bullet and fix it. I would say the shaft bearings are headed south despite the hand feel test.

WHen my wheel his the housing, it felt flat, but upon furth review was scared. I guess when it spins 100000+ rpms, it will make a smooth cut.

Replace it while the cost is minimal. Otherwise you'll be sorry. Good luck

So, considering I have an '03 7.3 (weaker rods I think), I live at 8000ft so I'm leaning hard towards the .84 housing with all the ceramic uppipes & upgrades, and the most tuning I think I'll ever go with is a DP 140hp, should I get the drop-in Spearco IC or the bigger Spearco retro IC?

The truck is still under warranty, as the turbo noise worsens, should I take it in, get a new turbo, and plunck in a ATS housing, or..........

Looking for honest & knowledgable advice as the noise fron my turbo is getting worse daily. Gotta do something right away.... Thanks for all the honest opinions to come.....

Take it in for warranty, nothing wrong with a new turbo for the 100 buck deductible.
