Hi all. Working on a 00' ford e-350 with a 6.8. The customer brought this into my shop with an intermitant driveibility problem. he says for no reason it will just die. pop it in neutral and it starts right back up. so I check the alternator for ripple current with no problems found. fuel pressure is a bit low on the spectrum, however i don't believe that it is the cause for my problem. It dies consitantly on sharp right hand turns. but only in drive. if you make a hard, sharp, right ahnd turn about 20 mph, in neutral it will not die. The customer says it was at the dealer ship for 4 mounths and they could not cure the problem. no codes. he also says that ford reflashed the pcm for torque coverter lockup speed and that seem to help for about a year. but now the problems are back.please help.
just a wild guess, could the fuel pickup in the tank be loose or bent? causing the fuel line to get constricted flow when turning in one direction, or pulling the wires causing a bad contact to pump. this theory would not explain why the dealer reflashing the computer would help though. another wild guess would be if the bad wiring harness on the engine gets pulled as he turns, but in neutral the engine doesn't move as far without the torque in drive.
I would have to lean towards a torque concerter problem. During sharp right hand turns, the right tire (drive wheel for open diff) turns much slower. It seems as if the T.C. is not slipping enough to allow the motor to continue running. I would try doing a right hand turn and make it die, then duplicate the turn with the tranny in neutral. If it stays running in neutral, you know it is the torque converter. Just my .02
Just a thought but take the stearing column plastic off and check the wires that come
down from the over drive switch.Ive seen them chafe and cause some weard problems.
Hope this helps.
