Flashing overdrive light saved code 1728 which means transmission slippage. It seems to be working perfectly right now, but I did feel something that wasn't right at the time. Dealer said it could be a non recurring problem that won't come back so monitor it or bring it in. Anyone have any experience with this code or the referenced slippage?
Also, non-dealer mechanic serviced tranny at 48,000 miles (currently 52k) and put Type F fluid in, not Mercon III. He said Type F is the best and uses it in all transmissions. Is this a problem? I obviously would have preferred he use the suggested Mercon but he didn't. Is the type F bad enough that I should drain and pay a dealer to change it?
I'm certainly no transmission expert. But I recently had my trans slipping, Turned out it was low on fluid and the "mechanic" that serviced it checked the fluid level with the motor off. With the motor on and the torgue converter running, it needed nearly another quart.
What type of trans is in your truck? If its a E4OD then use mercon III. If its a 4R70W then it uses Mercon V. The two are not interchangeable and you need to get the type F out ASAP!!! Dropping the pan is not good enough. You have to get it flushed through the cooler line. Take it to a dealer to get it done. It may cost a little more but the techs there know what they are doing. Don't take it to Jiffy Lube where the guy working on it just got out of high school for the day. Just hope you didn't mess up any clutches.
Type F isnt nec. all that bad you can interchange it for the orginal mercon if you want firmer shifts. however type f fluid will need changed more often (like 10k miles)
however *I* would NOT use it ford recommends mercon for a reason.
And if yours needed mercon 5 that is a syn. trans fluid and interchanging type f for this could cause some problems.
So basically I agree with the above post about flushing it.
And what I would do is get the complete flush run regular for about 5000 miles see how it acts then perhaps another change out of the fluid.
I have talked to a tranny mechanic and read an article by click and clack. The mechanic said the F won't hurt, it simply lacks the synthetic friction modifiers and will shift a little harder. He said there is no reason to drain it unless it bothers me. Click and Clack recommended it be drained as it could potentially hurt the torque converter.
Currently, it seems to be running perfectly fine but what i might do is, go to the discount parts store and get 16qts of Mercom III (E4OD) and have mechanic change the fluid for free. I paid $32 for his Type F but I probably can't get him to reimburse me for it since he thinks it is better than Mercon and others. He is a good guy and a good mechanic but like many older generation mechanics, they think the good ole' days and ways, are better.
