Engine fan and shroud questions...

Hey all, I'm thinking that the stock fan has been changed out for some other fan on my '78 F150 with a mighty 302. Did the stock fan have a fan clutch? Were any trucks ever made without a fan shroud in 1878? Are fan shrouds engine specific?

Here are a couple pics...

Some stock units had clutches and others did not.

You do need a shroud. To run without a shroud the fan blades would have to be about 1/2" from the radiator. Running without a shroud is not very efficient tho.

Numberdummy may be able to provide a shroud part number.

The fan looks pretty far from the radiator. Might want to call a parts store and see if they list a fan clutch for it. Definetly get a shroud.

I was looking around a couple days ago and Jeff's Bronco Graveyard has a fan shroud for these trucks with a 302. 85 bucks...

Yes, you need a shroud. Fan doesn't look correct for the 302.

Maybe Bill will chime in, don't have a part number for the correct fan. That looks like a FE fan.

Thanks for all the info. I'll try to locate the parts at our local scrap yard, if not I'll call JBG for the shroud... unless I swap in a different engine before then.

The fan is wrong, it doesn't even resemble a Ford fan with those curled edges.

You need a fan that's 18 1/2" in diameter. There are 100's of Ford car/truck fans from the 1960's/1970's/1980's that will work. Most are 5 blade, some are 7 blade = with or without a fan clutch.

Fan Shroud: D8TZ-8146-B is the correct shroud that Jarmafenser posted, but it's obsolete, and finding one will be tough. Use this fan shroud instead >>> D3TZ-8146-C It will fit, and it's still available from Ford. FTE sponsor DIRECTFORDPARTS shows it as $109.63 List / FTE member net: $77.09.

I'm pretty sure that 4 blade Fan shown is from my 289 Mustang.

It looks just like it.

This is the Mustang fanblade: C2OA-1130-B .. 4 Blade Fan 65/66 289.

But the fan in the above picture has curled blades. Never seen a Ford with blades like that. Looking at the fan head on, it looks identical, until you look at those scooped blades.

Thanks for the (current) part numbers for the shroud. My blade is quite small... maybe about 14" at the most. I'm really suprised how well it cools for being as "wrong" as it is.

Before creating this post I looked at the fan blade for a Ford part number, but could find none, which led me to believe this may be an old-school aftermarket fan, possibly from before the advent of the flex fan.
