Diesel Noise/ Rattle

Hey all- I have a 86 F350 non turbo, 140k miles, and I dont think it blows smoke that bad. Somewhere I read on this site about the diesel noise going away under load. Well, my rattle noise goes away under load, is it because of IP timing? It seems to pull fine, but probably bogs on hills- again no smoke. I recently added a temporary water separator with fuel lines one size smaller (I had same problem (dont really know if it is a problem) before adding separator). It just doesn't have that ("look out"- diesel coming) sound. Should I be concerned? Thanks

i think its running fine. no smoke means that you are burning all your fuel. as far as bogging down on hills, that natural for a non turbo idi. they don't have much power to start with. enjoy it, its already 21 years old and can go another 21 years.

My 87 6.9L non turbo'd with a 4 spd manual bogs down when I shift from 2nd to 3rd gear too. I chalk it up to lack of horsepower and an apparent wide gear ratio spread between 2nd and 3rd. Just the nature of the beast. I'd love to put on some bolt-on performance parts on it to help make some better HP, but I can't really seem to find any. I guess that's what we get for driving older, but much easier to work on, trucks!

P.S. My diesel rattle goes away at about 2000 RPM's as well. After that, she just roars!

Thanks everyone. I was looking at my load and it was close to 12k GVCW, and I realized betsy was probably doing all she could do. kf4hog, I was surfing the other day looking at over/underdrives and saw that Banks offers a 85+ hp/ 141# torgue aftermarket turbo kit, but I don't know the price- heres the link: http://store.bankspower.com/Categori...d-5c969e9e7105.
