I have an '07 6.0 with a 29 gal tank. I have the same issues with the guage as you do. It will go to 1/2 tank on 250-275 miles and then down to 1/4 tank by the time I hit 350. I just know that I can get at least 400 miles on a tank and pay attention to the trip computer.
Also, I am getting 15-16 mpg in town and about 17 hwy empty, no trailer.

Dating myself here...
Going waaay back, 4x4 originally had nothing to do with 4WD. It was the number of gears in the main tranny and the auxiliary. So the old Triplex Mack was a 5x3, 5 speed main, 3 speed aux for a total of 15 gears. The Quadruplex was a 5x4. The 13 speed RoadRangers were a 3x4 with a "low hole". And so on. When 4WD started to become more a fashion statement than a work truck they started using the "4x4" term as it's more commonly used now.
