Hey guys gotta question. Yesterday me and the lady went for a cruise in the Malibu Hills here in California and we noticed a rattling sound. Ive heard this sound before but never this loud before. It only is prominent when the truck is under load, ie. over the steep hills. I thought it was the exhaust system but I wasn't sure. Anyone have this or know what this is?
well if its exhaust its prolly the catalyctic shield and you can pop that off without it affecting anything but under load sounds like pre ignition... do you know what that sounds like??
I don't know what preignition sounds like, would it be normal being that loud though? My girlfriend's 93' explorer makes a the same sound just not as loud. we just dont know what it is. Maybe i'll try taking off the shield and test that out. thanks for the reply anyone else have any thoughts what this is?
Heat shields first. Auto tranny? If so, I had my bell housing front cover plate rattle against the main bell housing itself. Just bent the cover lip a little and the rattle is gone. Mine also only appeared under load conditions.
I do have an auto tranny, can you post a pic of what exactly your talking about. I dont exactly know what the bell housing looks like or where that is? thank you guys for all your help.
I don't have a pic right now but I'll try to explain: Just behind the oil pan there's a big thingie that sort of is shaped like a big bell - that's your tranny. the bell housing cover place faces the front of the truck, not the ground. It's facing the oil pan itself. You'll see a thin cover bolted to the round housing (again - facing the FRONT of the truck, not the ground). That's the bell housing cover. There will be a small gap between the 5 and 7 o-clock positions.
On mine, that cover, even though it was bolted tight, must have just rattled with a certain vibration frequency. Drove me crazy. Literally took a decent sized screwdriver and bent that bottom lip out towards the FRONT of th truck about 1/8th an inch. No more vibration.
Good luck.

ETA: When the dealership was troubleshooting this (still under warranty), I got 3 brand new CATS out of it.
I'm doing more investigation today because its still rattling. I think the sound might actually be coming from the engine cab. I think i've noticed before that the belt tensioner
rattles a little bit because of movement. I'mnot sure what i'm talking about but i will look at it today.
