Truck makes a surging noise when heavy up hill towing

Has anyone heard this? When towing my 5th wheel up some really step inclines my truck some times starts to make a surging whooshing noise that pulsates. Its sounds as if the trans is slipping then catching. But I am certain that the trans is not slipping because the Tach does not change and my forward motion stays constant. My turbo boost gauge stays constant also. I have to back way off the throttle to stop the noise. It only happens after a real long pull up real steep hill, well over 2 miles of constant almost full throttle pull.

My truck is a 2002 all stock, no programmer. Trans temp gets to about 210.

Whats strange is that it doesn’t do it right away it takes a few minutes of heavy pulling.

It would be turbo surge. I believe the fix is to put on a wicked wheel and or a larger housing. I have an early 99 turbo that is next to impossible to surge (which is the only +). Some others will be on here shortly to suggest how to fix.

correctamundo.
turbo surge. caused by exhaust pulses or something or other.

ive heard a WW will reduce but not entirely eliminate it. a ATS housing w/ the stock wheel seems to be the best (short of a whole different turbo) and is what im going to do to eliminate my surge.

i had the same problem and just installed the wicked wheel last weekend and wow what a differance. the surge is from the air bouncing off of the compressor wheel and it is being "super heated" i think thats what the surge is.

Shouldn’t the boost be fluctuating with the noise? Because it doesn’t it stays at a constant boost of around 15-18 PSI

if the boost goes up and down with the noise than it is turbo surge which sounds like a fast puffing sound. if it is a slower up and down wail kind of like a police car siren than its your cooling fan clutch engaging and disengaging which is probably what you are hearing

I think the fan clutch is it, should I do something about it or just leave it? Is this why my Temps seem to creep up as the engine is working harder and I am going slower at the top of the hill and not moving enough air across the radiator? If so would an electric fan in front of the radiator help?

Ditto here

Just took my 5th up in the mountains this weekend and have the same exact noise. I did play a little bit to try to figure what the problem was. Thought at first it was the transmission, (Please God not the transmission). If I turned the Air Conditioner off the noise would go away in less than 10 seconds. Comming home (downhill) I could run the AC and no noise. My personal guess is the fan clutch but would like any input from those in the know. Also my belt isn't in the best condition so I will replace it first.

Desmo,

Forgot to mention about your trans temp. After I installed my tru-cool trans cooler I have found my trans runs about 70 degrees above the outside temp. On my trip this last weekend outside air temp was 93-98 degrees and my trans temp guage kept right at 160-165 the whole time, that was uphill towing the 5th.

Desmo,
Change the exhaust, turbo housing and turbo wheel plus a chip to get the boost up to 25-28 PSI.
The truck will be more pleasurable to drive pulling a trailer after that. I am very happy with my 99 this way.

" I believe the fix is to put on a wicked wheel and or a larger housing. I have an early 99 turbo that is next to impossible to surge (which is the only +)"

Do I remember correctly that the WW was stock on the early 99s?
