Truck makes a surging noise when heavy up hill towing
Has anyone heard this? When towing my 5th wheel up some really step inclines my truck some times starts to make a surging whooshing noise that pulsates. Its sounds as if the trans is slipping then catching. But I am certain that the trans is not slipping because the Tach does not change and my forward motion stays constant. My turbo boost gauge stays constant also. I have to back way off the throttle to stop the noise. It only happens after a real long pull up real steep hill, well over 2 miles of constant almost full throttle pull.
My truck is a 2002 all stock, no programmer. Trans temp gets to about 210.
Whats strange is that it doesn’t do it right away it takes a few minutes of heavy pulling.

It would be turbo surge. I believe the fix is to put on a wicked wheel and or a larger housing. I have an early 99 turbo that is next to impossible to surge (which is the only +). Some others will be on here shortly to suggest how to fix.

I think the fan clutch is it, should I do something about it or just leave it? Is this why my Temps seem to creep up as the engine is working harder and I am going slower at the top of the hill and not moving enough air across the radiator? If so would an electric fan in front of the radiator help?

Ditto here
Just took my 5th up in the mountains this weekend and have the same exact noise. I did play a little bit to try to figure what the problem was. Thought at first it was the transmission, (Please God not the transmission). If I turned the Air Conditioner off the noise would go away in less than 10 seconds. Comming home (downhill) I could run the AC and no noise. My personal guess is the fan clutch but would like any input from those in the know. Also my belt isn't in the best condition so I will replace it first.

Desmo,
Forgot to mention about your trans temp. After I installed my tru-cool trans cooler I have found my trans runs about 70 degrees above the outside temp. On my trip this last weekend outside air temp was 93-98 degrees and my trans temp guage kept right at 160-165 the whole time, that was uphill towing the 5th.
