Original 272 that burns oil

Any advice on where to look on an untouched 272 in a 56 F100 that is burning oil and smokes? Checked the compression and all cylinders are around 60-70 PSI each but all have oil residue on the plugs. I have checked the oil return ports under the valve covers and they are clean. It doesn't smoke that bad at an idle but when I drive it its like I am fogging for bugs. Thanks for the help in advance.

Valve guide seals are the most likely thing. Although the compression is low. The seals get brittle and crack with age. They can be replaced without pulling the head with an adaper to put air into the cyl to keep the valve closed so as not to drop on the piston while doing it.
Yer oil wiper rings may be stuck also. I recomend an overhaul.

you can use the rope trick when replacing the seals. 60-70 psi is also way low to the point of being shot. the entire engine may have to rebuilt.

It is amazing the motor runs at all with those compression numbers. Flatheads had a 6.3:1 ratio and 100 psi per cylinder. Plan on a full motor reconditioning, including all new bearings, reground crank, cylinder bore, etc.

My Y block is in about the same shape in my Fairlane. They make me run in the back of the parades cuz it smokes so bad. As long as they are getting oil to the center main and rockers they will run almost forever.

True, very true. I wish I could remember all of the stories, or even some of them . One had to do with an old demolition derby, with the radiator hammered, no coolant, and the Y finished, or something...

The motor currently in my truck came from a junkyard. One 113 head, one C head. Rocker shafts were so badly grooved a ruler might have done a fair job of measuring the depth, and of course rockers equally bad. Rods were nonrebuildable. Crank had to have a clean up grind, ending with a 30/50. Bores had to go .080 over. It was a mess, and it ran like that!
