I have a 97 7.3 PSD 5 speed. Need to change the clutch, but i want to convert it over to standard instead of dual mass. Im not sure on which clutch to use. Is there a special size clutch i need to get, or could I just put in a LUK style solid flywheel with a LUK 12" clutch? Any info is appreciated Thanks.
There are kits available that will help you convert your dual mass to a single. South bend has their con-o for a decient price and will hold more hp than luks kit
I did the dual mass replacement and at my "connection's" best price it was $1000.00 plus clutch PP etc.
My suggestion: Call Bean's Diesel Performance they can set you up with all you need to do the single mass with all included hardware for I think $650 or so.
ok thanks guys. My local auto parts store wants 1,289.00 for the conversion kit. But if I could buy the LUK style flywheel and 12" clutch seperate its around $700. Just wondering what the difference was.
Shop around some more you can save maybe about $100 more. There is no real "conversion" kit just remove the dual mass and replace it with a single mass. Trust me you can get it less than $700. Good luck Bro.
No prob Matt. By the way Welcome and enjoy. I have learned barrel loads of info here so stay in touch an dyou can too.
P.S. I am not the master on this forum some others are and I am afraid to mention who they are 'cause there may be a disagreement... Let it begin boys.
Give us a call, we should be able to help with anything you need. You are correct on the price, it is 540 + shipping. You may also want to consider replacing the hydraulics and the fork while doing the job. Give us a call when you are ready.
First stay away from any of the AUTO ZONE kits, they are junk. Second regardless of which brand be sure and get a Kevlar pilot bushing from Southbend instead of the standard pilot bearing. The Pilot bearings are one thing that tend to be a problem. I would go with Southbend for everything but LUK is ok also. Ive been through all three and Southbend has proven to be the best for me.
Matt, if you don't have a bunch of mod like injectors, you will be very pleased with the LUK setup. I loved mine, very smooth, no complaints. But when I did injectors and nitrous it wouldn't hold anymore. I ended up going with a ValAir clutch. While they are not as smooth as Tom's, they hold the power. And Dan is a super nice guy to deal with. valairinc dot com. Of the big clutch players, LUK, Southbend, ValAir, they are all excellent and I wouldn't hesitate to recomend each one of them. To me it just comes down to personal choice. But honestly, the price Tom quoted you is gonna be damn hard to beat, and it is a great clutch. Good luck man
