Towing

Ok about to purchase a real truck ( 2006 F150 with 5.4) currently have a 2001 S10 we purchased new. (Wife would not drive 1/2 ton) My question is about towing. What is included in the towing package on a 2006? How can you tell if the truck has the towing package? If not will it make a good tow vehicle (enclosed car trailer 20 X 8.5) . I know it is a very basic question so thanks for the help and be kind please...

that trailer weights over 3000 # and a car could weigh 4500# , so your about 7500# of weight ( about)........ the 5.4 is good, but you want to check the axle ratio of the truck. I have a 3.55 and it works good. I would not get less than that. 3.7 would also be a good choice. you can get the axle code off the door jab. .......... I don't know the specifics, but a factory tow package would include a BIG electrical plug on the back bumper, not the smaller 4 pin.

The tow package would have the 7 pin connector as previously mentioned, a frame mounted hitch, auxillary trans cooler and upgraded radiator. My '07 is equipped with the factory tow package and has all of these. The trans cooler is mounted in front of the radiator towards the bottom when you open the hood.

You have not offered enough info about the truck build.
Look in your owner manual pages 187 to 197.
Find your specific build and look at the GCWR figure.
Subtract your loaded truck weight from GCWR and that is the max you can legally tow.
After this it's matter of aux trans cooling, trailer hitch equipment, mirror extensions both sides and Trailer brake controller in the Cab, rated tires should be LT type.
Good luck.
