Fuel tank sending unit

So, I called the parts stores the other day. I really love 'em. Not. I need a sending unit.

'79 F350, side-mount tank, 2wd -- 20 gallon, I think. I'm guessing -- it doesn't matter for this part of the story. (O'Reilly's sells a 20 gallon side-mount tank.)

One monkey asked if I needed the pump, sending-unit, or whole thing? There's an inspiring vote of confidence. Then told me they didn't have "just a" sending unit and would have to buy "the whole thing". (Their website doesn't list anything for the side-mount tank EXCEPT the actual tank.)

One got totally confoozled -- couldn't quite figure out how a mechanical pump would work in the tank. (Give him credit - knew there was nothing inside the tank to drive a pump. Dock him cuz I clearly repeated "sending unit" and explained that the pump wasn't in the tank.)

The third insisted that it couldn't be a side-mount tank, but was perfectly willing to sell me a sending unit for a rear-mount.

So... does anyone have a part # for a side-mount tank sending unit? Bronco Graveyard has one, but I prefer to buy local when possible.

I sincerely doubt you will find one from a local parts store. You will have to get it from a sponsor via mail order or visit a local automotive recycling center.

1980 and later F100/350's have an in-tank fuel sender/electric fuel pump combination.

NO 1979 or earlier F100/350 has a fuel pump in the gas tank...PERIOD!

The sender is available as a unit, or the float, filter screen and gasket can be bought separately. The senders are dealer only, the other three parts I listed below...are available at Ford and parts stores.

C0AZ-9202-A .. Fuel Sender Float

C0AF-9276-A .. Fuel Sender Gasket

D1AZ-9A011-A .. Fuel Sender/Pickup Filter Screen

What is wrong with your sender, read empty all the time? The float is made of two pieces of copper soldered together, solder breaks down, gas seeps into float, float sinks to bottom of the tank. Sender no workee.

Which side mount tank is it?

Rear of the rear wheels = AFT AXLE.

Or front of rear wheels = MIDSHIP

It's midship. Actually, the guage pegs out over FULL. I can't remember if it went to empty when I grounded the wire or opened it up, but it was according to the troubleshooting instructions in the '78 truck shop-manuals and pointed to the sending unit.

I haven't had it out, yet -- it could be a repairable problem inside the tank (stuck float, bad wiring, etc).

I haven't called the dealer on it; unless I get the one guy there who actually knows something, it's just as frustrating as calling O'AutoZance. And even then, the best he can (usually) do is dig through the fiche and come up with a part # that he can't get -- feel like I waste his time, and I don't like it.

I have one good guy at the parts dept at the local Ford dealer. I don't bother him for the same reason.

If the gage pegs at full it means the sender or wires to it are shorted to ground.

When testing the wire at the tank:
-When it is not connected the gage should read empty.
-When shorted to ground the gage should read over full (don't keep it shorted for long).

The only plastic midship tank that could possibly fit his application is the one used for 4X4. The others are steel.

I checked before I posted... Please don't confuse me with the usual pinheaded parts clowns that are around today. I ALWAYS verify before posting parts numbers.

My question was for the OP Bill.

In almost 30 years that tank could have been replaced earlier in its life from a T-bone collosion or anything.

I wanted to know exactly what he has right now as it may not be Factory.

There definitely wasn't any slur against you for anything.

Dennis, a P/M was sent to OP with further info on what tank sender will work in place of the obsolete ones, another P/M was sent asking questions. As you know, ppl post things, then take forever to return to the thread..a P/M asks them to return and answer any Q's.

But if he did have a plastic tank, which one would it be? He'd have to look at the top of the sender for the engineering number. Some were stamped into the metal, some were rubber stamped.

P/M's takes things off the site.

The info is best Kept On the site

Yes, but us don't us others get to be involved as well ?

All I did was ask a simple question and for some reason it looks like you got offended.

You do a great thing here with your time and it is appreciated ...as well as others do.

With all the possible scenarios ....I don't assume anything

I looked at his gallery. His F350 is a 2wd dually, ex- U-haul truck. So it's a cab/chassis truck.

Yes -- 2wd dually, regular cab-n-chassis, ex-UHaul, metal tank. I'm not entirely sure how big the tank is -- I'm just assuming it's 20.2 based on what O'Reilly's has available on its website. It originally had two tanks, one outboard of the frame on each side, but the pass. side tank was removed and the tank-selector bypassed at some point.

And now I'm wondering how hard it would be to move it inside the frame or if the design of the bed would allow a rear-mount installation.
