There is no code to "change EGR". There are any number of EGR codes and just because there is an EGR codes doesn't mean the EGR valve itself is the problem.
Most importantly, I wouldn't trust anything the Autozone guy told you other than the code number. So let's start with that. What's the number?
Steve,
I did not see the number on his device. I asked him if he could reset the code, and he said that while he could, he would not, as it was against the law, or against AutoZone policy, whatever.
I am taking the van to a local service shop, for oil change, transmission and torque converter fluid change, and filters, and can ask them to see what needs to be done to clear the CEL. Note: I recently had the ABS light come on, stay on, no flashes, and believe I continue to have ABS in front wheels, with rear wheels 'locking' on wet pavement, when I test the brakes. Not sure if that means anything as regards the CEL. Thanks
Whenever you have the codes read, be sure to get a code number. No, its not against the law to clear the codes, or autozone policy for that matter. The reason Autozone will read your codes is to sell you parts. Your experience is case in point. It has an EGR code. So they sell you an EGR. There is a lot more to diagnostics than reading a code. Reading the codes is just the first step. Ford EGR codes are notoriously hard to diagnose. And if the guy at Autozone knew enough to know that, he wouldn't be working at Autozone.
The ABS light will have nothing to do with the CEL. For the ABS light, I would first clean the wheel sensors on the front wheels. Its common for them to get contaminated with metal debris off the brake pads/rotors and turn on the light. All you have to do is squirt them with brakeclean and wipe them clean.
Have the shop doing the service read the codes and record the numbers.
Auto Zone redid the code readings, for my Check Engine Light inquiry, as
follows:
PO401 EGR Flow Insufficient
and
PO402 EGR Flow Excessive
and
PO455 Emmission Control issue
Suggestions are welcome. Van runs well, code stays regardless of full gas, near empty gas, and old/new gas cap. I am novice to self-help, and willing, so details of what and how-to are appreciated. 2000 E250 4.2L
I'm not sure on the codes but i know on my intrepid you just disconnected the battery for a while and when you connect it the codes will be erased and the CEL will be off till it trips a new code. I personally would disconnect the battery for a bit 5-10 min i think and connect it back the CEL should be off then if the light comes back on take it to auto zone and get it read once again. i know on my trep it would trip a code i would reset the light and it would take a couple of weeks to light up again . might be a random fluke. sometimes if the engine trips a code the problem may be corrected but its stored in the memory till its cleared. hope this helps till someone can give you more information

Cub,
Thank you for the info. It may come to that, and if there is something amiss with the EGR that I may fix, I want to do so. Just today, I noted a gizmo for about $5, to plug into the cig lighter, with it's attached 9v battery, so the personalized settings, Radio stations, etc. would be retained when a battery is disonnected. Seems like a small investment for just such a task.
I did a search on the internet for those two codes and found a few places that they said that they replaced the EGR and the light came back on and ford is bad about the Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) going bad. so before replacing your EGR check this out i guess this is a pic of it but not sure Jsut do a google search on those codes and youll get lots of bites<br>
