tranny fluid question.

looking at changing my tranny fluid and filter this weekend. how big a job to drop the pan and change the filter? i haven't done one before.

also, what do you guys recommend for tranny fluid. i haul a 4 place snowmobile trailer a lot in the winter and have my Evolution set on the 60hp setting. didn't know if a better oil is needed to prevent slipping/heat. don't want to have to replace the tranny any sooner than needed.

truck has 90K on it, it's an 03 F250.

thanks for the help

The filter change is very easy. About anyone who can breath can do it. Go to guzzle.micro.com and click under BTS Valve Body. You will want to save this site under your favorites. It is awesome. I recommend Schaefers Trans Fluid. A lot of the big transmissions buiders use this oil, like BTS, who uses it their trannies.

Here is a link to Guzzles BTS valve body intall - it will have all the important stuff for you. Pretty straight forward, dirty but easy, job.

You might want to look around for the methods on pumping the fluid out of the tranny. I can't seem to locate it right now.

I would, if you don't have one, install a tranny temperature gauge. High temps is what destroys fluid and our tranny's. Also, consider external cooler and external (real) filtration. The in-pan filters are nearly worthless as a filter...filter out chunks is about it. I also have an inline magnetic filter to catch real small stuff. I have done all of these mods and they are, in my opinion, worth the small amount of money and time, to save the tranny.

I would hold off the external filter. I have been hearing from some of the guys who are runnig BTS tranny that they are not recommending using additional filters to the one already in the trans. Somebody correct me if I am wrong, but I think it has something to do with the filter causing low pressure and thus shifting problems. It is a great idea to get the gauges, just to keep an eye on things.

I just changed the fluid and filter - very easy

I have a F250 2001 7.3L 4x4 which just started have two problems

1) the engine surges after it starts for about 10 secs - happens more when it is cold or I have not started it in a week or so.
2) Just start have the transmission stick in 1 gear. It will go up 2300 rpm and then I have to let off the gas to get it to shift. It has also happened shifting from 2 to 3 and 3 to OD. I just replaced the solenoid pack - still have the problem.
any suggestions would be appreciated

After you get the pan off maybe you should add a drain plug to the pan. Like this:

You'll be glad you have it the next time you flush your tranny.

Well, that's not the 1st time I stumbled into a forum and don't know where I am. Yep, thought I was in the OBS forum. Sorry for my confusion, I hope it's not alzhiemers (sp).
