I have a coolant leak. It appears to be coming from the where the lower radiator hose goes into the water pump. But I replaced the crappy Ford squeeze clamp with a worm-screw hose clamp yet the leak is still there. So my next thought is that it may be coming from the gasket between the water pump down pipe (where the lower radiator hose attaches) and the water pump or the water pump its self. I don't want to tear into all that unless it seems like the likely leak origin. Is there anything else up in there that might cause it to leak? I have had the water pump replaced once around 95k. I know have around 164k on my 2000 7.3.
I'd pull the radiator hose off and have a look at it. If I remember right, there is a common issue there, but I can't recall exactly what it is. Maybe someone else will chime in with the exact problem. Besides, it's a good excuse to change your coolant and replace your hoses anyway...
I personally have seen corrosion on the fittings coming from water pumps that will sometimes make re-sealing a new hose very difficult, especially if there is a lot of pitting on the hose connection.
Also, be careful tightening up the bolts on that unit. If the bolt heads are corroded very much, it is easy to round off a bolt head and create a real PITA issue for yourself.
I have the exact leak, actually dribble in my case. I believe that is where the thermostat is located (between the down spout that the hose attaches to and the WP). I did a little research and the recommended fix is a new down spout, thermostat, and gasket. I found an aftermarket down spout at one of the sponsor's sites for like $26, it was the site that has their own 205deg t'stat..... I haven't ordered anything yet but I need to do it! Front leaf spring swap out takes priority this weekend! Who needs antifreeze..
It could also be a worn seal, which is a very common problem. My pump was replaced at 30K because it was venting coolant from the weep hole. It only occurred after the engine was turned off as the residual coolant pressure bled away.

I had that happen as well, but it was obvious when that occured. This is happening while the engine is running. It drips coolant.
