i have an 81 bronco 302 with the weirdest carb i have ever seen.it is a variable venturi ? it starts easy enuf, but idles very high until driven for 10-20 minutes. the outside temp seems to affect it. then when the eng gets warmed up the idle drops lower than normal and eng quits. can i bolt up a normal carb to the existing manifold? will i get better mileage ? any help is really appreciated. i also have oil pressure questions but will get to that next time. thank u all...

Is your Carb the one with the sliding choke plates ? Ive seen those plates stick on those carbs . They are beasts to work on and get them to work properly . The plates need to be lubricated beacuse they will stick partially shut .

I've heard nothing but bad things about the variable venturi carbs. You should be able to bolt any aftermarket carb to your manifold. I would suggest the Edelbrock 600cfm with electric choke. It's about as trouble free as you can get.

or consider a 600 Holley. I bought a edelbrock a couple years ago for a 1978 f-150 302 4 spd and had a bear of a time getting it tuned right. it also came with the worst bracket kit I have ever seen. I wound up just making my own throttle cable bracket. The holley also has parts available at most any auto parts store.

 

I have not done it my self, but I have been told you can replace this carburetor easily with a regular Motorcraft 2150 2 bbl.
