my 390 has decided to tick loudly; when i first got the truck a couple years ago it had a faint lifter tick but Lucas Oil Treatment cleared it up
but like i said my tick is back; its louder; and its directly porportional to gas feed meaning more gas faster ticking and it happily ticks away while idleing
combine with this my oil light is infequently coming on when the engine idles; goes out if you step on the gas; may come on if you release the gas; and always comes on when you are coming to a stop
truck performance does not seem affected and oil level is good -- new oil and filter within last 1000 miles
i'm planning on a total rebuild this summer cause i suckered my Ford tech buddy into helping
just wondering what these recent symptoms should make me look for in the problem dept.

 

Almost sounds like the oil pump is starting to fail.

 

You look at everything on a total rebuild. Check every clearance on the rotating assembly, oil pump, rocker shafts getting crudded up score the rocker/shaft and the clearance is toast. Provided the crank, cam, rocker assemblies are right it's probably a oil pump on it's last leg...

 

I would swap out yer pump. Yer prolly only looking at around $40. That'll be some cheap insurance for it getting any worse and keeping block good til it comes time to do your rebuild.
