Differences between '85 and '87?
Hi guys...
I recently bought an '85 XLT full size Bronco. It has a newly rebuilt, modified engine 351W HO, bored .040 out, Crane CAM, Holley Carb, Edelbrock intake. The problem is that It's got stock headers and really "can't breathe" yet.
I've been looking for some aftermarket headers and exhaust systems, however the majority say they are for 1987 and later models.
What is the difference between '85 and '87? I'm guessing it is only emission changes (not a concern of mine in FLA). Can I buy headers/exhaust for an '87 Bronco/F-150 and fit it without problems on mine?

Thanks for the info. I think I may go with Dynomax. I found they carry very reasonable headers with a lifetime guarentee, as well as Dual exhaust kits. They had a good writeup in the latest Peterson's 4wheel and off-road mag. I'm not sure if it is possible to route 2 pipes past the transfer case, so I might be limited to a cat back system, but I'll keep looking. I guess going to an exhaust shop is the best idea but I'm still looking for a bolt on kit that will do it.

Please let me know what you find. I am in the same boat that you are in. I would like to find a good bolt-on kit but everything only goes back to '87 and I have an 85.

Hello there...I called Flowmaster and while they couldn't tell me what the difference was, they said the '87 and later kit would not work with my '85.
The only bolt-on preformance system I found (cat back) was from Gibson, part number 319676, which is for 1985-86 full sized Bronco. It has a lifetime warranty however the price tag is about $280.
I've re-arranged my priorities and will spend my "play" money restoring other parts of the vehicle first. In the mean while I'm probably going to replace the rotted pipe with parts from NAPA. They sell the pipe and muffler for about $100 total. It's only a 2 1/4" pipe, but it will due for the time being.
My final intention will be to take it into an exhaust shop with a new set of headers and have them make everything from the headers back. That way I can play with my options, including adding an O2 sensor to help me fine tune the carb....

Thanks for the info Dave. I have a flowmaster on mine with a 3" pipe that will need replacing in the very near future (its got a small hole in the muffler). If I can find a decent replacement until a total rebuild is done in a 3 years or so it would be nice. I will have to stay away from the custom stuff from the muffler shop until then.
