Best way to clean axle tubes?

I have the rear end tore apart on my 76 highboy. I have been running a coat hanger down the tubes with a rag for an hour now and not really getting anywhere. Unfortunatly I don't have compressed air. Any ideas?

I spray brake cleaner in the axle tubes. This will loosen the old gear oil. Of course I use air afterwards but a rag will work fine. It'll just take a littlke longer to clean up.

I seen the Ford mechanic use a power sprayer with solvent. I used a sock and an axle the last time I did it.

Make sure you spend some time on it, especially if you blew your diff. The little chunks like to hold up in the tubes and then come out and get your new gears and bearings....

(ask me how I know this.....)

I guess i'll make sure there 100% clean then. I originally was just pushing a rag through with a coat hanger and it didn't seem to be working very well. I finally hooked the end of the coat hanger and hooked the rag to it and pulled it back and forth several times and that seemed to work fairly well. I'll be sure and hit them up again. Thanks.

try using a broom stick with some old carpet , much stronger. [remeber to remove the bullets before cleaning your guns!]

I second that. I wrapped a large rag around the end of a broom stick and pushed it through each tube to the differential housing and pulled the rag out from there.

I duct-taped a small wire brush to 3/4"x1"x25" piece of wood and used brake cleaner to clean my axle tube. I also used my "long-handled" brush to push my cleaning rags through the axle tube.
