Thanks for all the kind words fellas, and yes the 460 is more the sufficent in the power dept. I'm still tweaking it a little more and hope to get a stall converter and headers for it later on. For now though it'll do. Funds are almost all gone.

I'm hoping to find a nice condition stock radio to fill in the hole on the dash, but will put a more modern stereo setup in the glove box and build so as not to intrude on the truck. Just simple stereo that I can hear over the gear drive. Other than that it's just some fine tuning and I'm done for now.

If someone cut a rectangular hole in the dash for a later radio, the original radio will not fit.

With the original radio, only two small holes were drilled in the dash for the R/L radio shafts to poke thru.

Another small hole was drilled in the center for the wire feed for the dials bulb.

Just behind the face plate, there was a three hole bracket that fit over the two radio shafts, and the bulb.

One nut on each shaft held the radio to the dash.

Actually the third ( larger center) hole is to allow the light bulb to poke through not the wire. The bulb is held by the pin mount on the face of the radio chassis. There is no wire.

Depends on the size of the opening if it is a current DIN radio chassis opening or the old BIG opening for old cassettes and 8 tracks.

Yeah I just found a descent stock radio and realized that the hole was opened up for an older tape deck style aftermarket radio. Friggins sucks!!!!

If I'd know that then I would have repaired the dash then painted it. I'm pissed now and I guess I'll just go the unthinkable route and install the deck in the dash. I didn't want to do that, but I didn't do my homework prior to painting the truck. Damn this sucks......

What you've done to the truck so far, I'm sure you can fill in the hole and start over with a stock radio. Just cover real good and touch up when your done. I know it's sounds easy but patience and care you'll get it done.
Good luck

Pertano. I hated giving it up but couldn't bring it with me when I moved from the mountains in PA to in town with no space, or garage to work on the old beast in NC. I kept all of the parts I collected to work on restoring it and building a bored and stroked 292 Y-block so maybe someday I'll get to it or another one after I'm done working on the old Victorian that currently occupies all of my time and money.

It sure is a sweet ride you have, to bad about the stereo. Try seeing if you can get someone to chrome the plastic faceplate for a modern head unit. At least then it would be really shiny instead of black plastic. Good luck with the rest of your details.

Tape off the upper dash and add a set of aluminum dash trim. Then you can redo the lower dash with new sheet metal, metal finish and paint. the trim will hide the line.

the trim is a two piece set found in custom cabs with a dash pad. And also in some trucks not equipped with a pad.

If you need the trim i have three sets with clips.
