drive shaft interchange
Ok guys heres a good wuestion. So i broke the driveshaft in my 79 F-250. Its a 4spd 4wd with a 205 transfer and a dana 60 rear. I have a drive shaft out of a 79 F-150 with the same trans and transfer and the 9in rear. Will it work in my F-250? Length im sure is the same but what about u-joint size? Also i know they make bigger pinion yokes for the 60 and 205 but what about for the drive shaft? And what is the best size to go with?

you will only have the strenght of the smallest component. That would prevent you from breaking axles, but might leave you a bit on the weak side for u-joints.
Also, the D60 is quite a bit larger in diameter than the 9 inch, so the D60 equiped truck will have a shorter shaft. If you were able to break a shaft from the D60 equiped truck, you are gonna eat up half ton stuff.

Ok well heres the deal my drive shaft looked to be fixed at some point and it broke at a weld where the slip joint welds to the shaft. Doesnt look to be the factory weld. Sorry for not makin myself clear. As far as me breakin stuff that probably wont happen. I only use my truck to haul and pull. To much money to run threw the mud.

Yea I know what you are talking with it being welded on the slip joint where it goes into the shaft. It is the same way on my 79 250. But isnt that suppose to be able to slide in and out when the suspension goes up and down. Does anybody think I should fix that before I start taking it on the road?

Yes if the slip joint is siezed you'll need to fix it before you start driving it.If the shaft can't extend and retract it will beat the bearings out of the rear or t-case over time.It could also give you vibration problems.Hope this helps.
