Estimated city/highway mpg for 4x2 vs. 4x4
#16
Do you keep any extra weight in the vehicle, are the tires properly inflated, are you in a hilly area?
Lots of different things can affect it. I can get as low as 12 if I'm driving from stoplight to stoplight. Idling and then quick starts can kill gas mileage.
A true test would be to go on a 300 or so mile road trip to check out your highway mileage. If the highway is mostly flat and you don't have a headwind, you should be able to get 17-18mpg. If you're not, then something could be wrong with your computer (or you have O/D turned off )

or if you are highway driving and your not getting 19-20 mpg, you probably are driving too fast. If I stay 70mph or below I usually get 19-21 mpg, but I rarely stay below 70 on the freeway. If you drive over 70 just be prepared for your fuel gauge to start ticking down. Sometimes driving out of town my average speed may be 80 and my mpg average is 16-17.

I only have 400 miles on my 07 EB non EL 4x4 with tow package.
3.73 gears as all the 4x4 07 Expeditions have. The dash read out says 14 mpg, but who knows. To early to tell and the engine may still be a little tight so It will be a while before I can really say. Also here on the west slope of Colorado every road seems to be uphill so I am sure that has some effect on MPG.

2008 4x4 Limited, 2k miles, you are getting exactly what I am getting. I have the tow package BUT the gears are higher 3.31 than the 07 model lower gears 3.73.

The lower 3.73 gears are an option now on the 08 4x4 Non-EL, I opted for the 3.31 gears for better mileage and hope the 6-speed trans will do the rest when towing.

My '07 SWB w/trailer tow is seeing 15.5 to 17.4 around town with about 4000 on the odo - difference btw the two: heavy foot or not... This is with 285/65-18 BFG All-Terrain T/A KO's... Likely the change in size accounts for some of the better mileage, along with the 6-speed. Also, bear in mind that max mileage "break-in" doesn't set in until somewhere around 5K-10K miles...

Just curious if everyone with higher MPG's are resetting the meter each tank or are these numbers an average over all driving? The best I get per tank around town is 12-13 with my 07 2WD EB EL with towing package. Took a trip to FL and all highway was 16, of course I know why that one was low, 85mph.

Good question Ratpack. I don't normally reset the message center, however, when I do, the gas mileage increases to 20 mpg or higher as I hit the highway driving at 60mph, however, mileage starts to decrease once I hit stop and go traffic. For example, I have not reset the mileage for at least one week and my msg center reads 15.2 mpg on average.

Ditto what BigBadBob said Ratpack... For the first few tankfulls, the skeptic in me was checking the message center calculations... just to be sure After that, I reset it every couple tankfulls to be sure there isn't a dramatic change that goes un-noticed in the overall mpg...
12-13 seems a little low, but not by much for an EL: style of driving (hard, or not, acceleration), type of driving (hills, stop N go, etc.), and size/weight could easily account for the difference btw our two experiences... Also, the number of miles you have so far may contribute...

The meter is pretty much dead on from what I can tell. I have calculated it by hand and it is the same. I have seen the same results as BigBadBob, 17 on the highway at 80mph and then around town it drops to about 15 or so by the end of the tank. When I see 12-13, it is when I reset at fill up and it is all around town driving and most of that is a lot of stoplights.

I find the average mile per gallon reported by the message center is up to 2 miles per gallon higher than the actual miles per gallon. I took a long 1,000 mile road trip and anther tank of gas doing some local driving. I reset the trip meter and average miles per gallon meter at each fill-up and ran it till the tank was near empty, and then I filled it up and divided the actual miles driven by the actual gallons of gas used. The actual miles per gallon was always less then reported by the message center by anywhere from .5 to 2 gallons per tank full of gas.
