Question supercharge a 272 yblock

I have a paxton supercharger left over from my 1963 Studebaker Avanti R2. I want to install it on my 56 ford 272 and wonder if anyone out there has done this? I think my compression ratio is low enough to be ok. Let me in on any problems you may see and if the 272 performs as good as the Stude 289-it should work out good.THANKS

Huh, didn't think I'd hear that today... sounds damn awesome though, blow a few of the chopped in 302's away hehehe, I like your thinking!

I don't see why it could fit, are you still using a old stlye Holley #94 carberator?

Before I would consider boosting a 272 Y Block, I would check all the technical info at Ford-Y-Block.com There are many pages of good info including all the work they are doing with the Y-Block. I don't think any of the 272 engines had reinforced cyl heads and many of the early attempts at boosting power resulted in broken combustion chambers. Good luck

It was a Mccullough supercharger, first fitted to Ford's as aftermarket equipment in 1950. (there were some available in the 1930's, but they are few and far between)

Came as a factory option on T-Birds in 57 I believe.

BINGO!

The famous F Bird..so called because engine code was an F.

There was also an E Bird...dual quads...

Both were 312's.

McCollough was bought by Paxton...Paxton blowers were installed on 1963/64 Studebaker R2 Super Larks, Super Hawks, and Avanti's.

The 289 (originally 232-1951) Studebaker engine is a direct copy of the 1949 Cadillac OHV 331ci engine, it bears no relationship to a Ford 289. The 4V intake manifold from the Cadillac is a bolt on to the Studie engine, but the Studie manifold won't fit the Cadillac. Studie V8's used solid lifters, Cads had hydraulic lifters.

And outlawed in NA$CAR in the same year... along with Fuel Injection...

The Supercharger on an Avanti R2 should be the VS57... I think (can't recall though, so check) which was designed originally for the Y-Block.

You might be able to find the mounting brackets for it on e-bay or the like.

Guess who used to be a Studie partsman? 1960/62 prior to working for Ford.

I know a guy that has ALL the goodies to mount the blower to the Y block.

Besides Corvettes, Pontiac had FI in 1957/58.

Actually, No. Paxton/McCulloch was one company, started by Robert P. (Paxton) McCulloch. "McCulloch also developed a centrifugal supercharger for automotive use. At first, these were produced and sold under the McCulloch name; but, in 1956, the supercharger division was renamed Paxton Superchargers."

He also bought the London Bridge and brought it to Arizona, which has nothing to do with this thread, but I thought it was interesting.

There were F code fairlanes in '57 also. Duel Quad was the E Code.

Robert P. McCulloch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anyway, the Stude S/C should work on the 272, providing you can find all the correct mounting hardware and pulleys. Check Mummert, he has some repro S/C parts.

To add to the litter, a friend I've know for 10 years had a new, not known to me, McCulloch(sp?) supercharger. Sold it to a guy for $175. The guy sold it before even picking it up for $350. The next owner sold it to for $750, and the last dude got a great deal.

I was doing some looking into old forums as I am maybe wanting to put a paxton/Mc on the 292 I am rebuilding and was curious how this project turned out.

Looks like my biggest issue is finding a supercharger that still works.
