my grampa has a 1990 f150 xlt lariat 4x4 its has its second engine with a little under 40k miles(on the current engine) it is a farm truck and has never been driven outside of his local area the chassis has about 130k on it but he is willing to give it to me the problem is, i live in melbourne FL and he lives near Raliegh NC and hes worried it wont make it the 700 miles to florida, wich is all i need it to do i work(help out) at a local mech shop part time so fixing it up is not the problem
im personally a JDM tuna kid so its hard for me to trust something whos redline is where my powerband starts lol but it has allot of sentimental value for me but what do you guys think?
if it is a solid truck and runs good around town then get AAA and go drive it home.
I second that. If there aren't any glaring problems with it, drivability-wise, then I would go up there and do a quick tuneup on her. Check and/or change the tranny fluid (is it an auto?), change the oil and filter, clean the air filter, replace fuel filter, check fluid in transfer case, air the tires, check for any engine codes, torque the lugs to spec, grab a LOT of good music, and hit the road. AAA might also not be a bad idea
"I got it... you drive a Honda. ".....well mazda but yeah
my grampa also said the gear ratio is really low and thats why it has burned through the original motor and why this one is now going (it burns oil) does anyone know about the different gearing from the factory on this model and what is interchangeable
I'm a lot closer than you....Charleston SC........if it's a 5.0/302 with only 40k.......he can give it to you and you can give it to me and I promise you can visit it anytime you want!!

Well.. I'm sure he's a nice guy.. he is giving you a truck after all.. but the gearing has nothing to do with why it's burning oil. It could be because Gramps only drives it a couple times a week and it's never long enough to get the engine warmed up. Short runs like that will killl a motor. Maybe the replacement engine wasn't exactly new just "refurbished". Who knows... there are lots of variables. In any event, if it starts and runs fine.. doesn't stall for no reason or make any bad mechanical noises, then it should make the trip no problem. There are lots of options for gearing and lots more to make the motor perform closer to it's potential...just surf around the is forum for a while and read some of the earlier posts. Good luck and welcome aboard.
Is it burning or leaking? I have the exact same truck (see below) and when I got it the previous owner said it burnt a little oil. Well it turned out to be the oil sending unit was leaking. Changed it and no oil being lost or burnt. Just a thought. Great truck.. Enjoy it ..I do!!!
ps I'm in Wake Forest just one town up from Raleigh (ten minutes) if you should decide to change your mind about getting the truck!! :-)
