There are many different models of the 4 cyl Hercules diesels. Most commonly found in generators and marine applications.

I am not aware of anyone that has installed one of these in a Bronco. Do you have a particular model in mind? I wouldn't even consider one unless it was turbocharged. I'm not sure if an SAE bellhousing is available to bolt to them. And the weight is going to be a deciding factor. If you're looking for a small diesel to swap, check out the 4BT Cummins. It is the 4 cylinder brother to the popular 5.9 Cummins used by Dodge and many other applications.

The Hercules/White is a DT 3.7 tubo diesel out of a Wonder Bread truck. I'm told that it is a Ford based truck. It has a T-19 hooked up to it now. I was told that the T-19 on it has a Ford pattern on the front so I'm hoping I can use a overdrive with it. It looks about the same size as a Cummins.

A search of the DT 3.7 turns up these specs: 108 hp @ 2800/ 231 ft lbs @ 1800. There is an aftercooled version with 125 hp. From what I can tell, it is a little lighter than the 4B Cummins.

You need to find out some specifics on the bellhousing/ transmission arrangement. If you plan on keeping the Dana 20, you would need to be able to use the T18 2wd Ford output shaft and have the correct tailhousing pattern if don't have access to build an adaptor. If it uses the standard Ford transmission pattern, then your options open up. Also need to know input shaft size and spline count of the transmission.

This series of engine seems to be a popular engine to swap in the Dodge M37 and the civilian brother. If I remember correctly, the were used in limited numbers in those trucks. They are much heavier and stouter than the Bronco, but they were really low geared (4.88 and lower) and limited to about 45-50 mph with stock tires. Wht the engine lacks in hp, is made up with gearing.

In my opinion, it isn't worth it for the lack of power you would have.

Larry, Did you ever do the swap? I have found the t-19 gear ratios lacking when matched to this tiny diesel and am wondering if you have installed any kind of overdrive yet. Mine hercules has has little HP...thank goodness it has lotsa torque for an engine designed 60 years ago. It does get 20 mpg all the time tho...Jerry

Has good weight (over the 4BT) and adaptability. Who cares bout hp (unless below 80 -100). I just could never find the dementions for my theoretical match to the EB engine bay. Check that out as well.
The whole (automotive) question is always about application - what is ur end goal in terms of use?
