Exclamation HELP!!! 84 Ranger,.. Guttless, :(

hey all i just bought my first ranger, its an 84 4x4 with the v6, maybe im just used to my powerstroke, but the ranger is realy slow. We did a tune up, plugs wires, cap and roter, the truck has sat for 6 years, but we got it running really good. However it just doesent seem like it wants to get up to 50mph unless its down hill. Gonna check the thermostat to see if thats the reason it heats up. plus we dont know if we have the right computer, heck the truck runs without it plugged in! need some help, i need this truck to go 70 on the freeway!!

Runs the 'same' without the computer plugged in? Sounds like it's in limp home mode. They seemingly run ok like that, but there's no adjustments by the computer for all the driving conditions like...acceleration, proper idle, etc. Your computer may be pooched. Not sure if there's a test as to whether it is pooched, but somebody else'll be along to give particulars. Scrap yard units may be of no use unless they have a test bed for them. The dealer may help with testing the old unit, but he's probably out chasing down bunny eggs with the kids right now!!

Definitely sounds like a computer problem. Maybe you can get one from a junkyard, but like fflinstone stated, unles they have a way to check it, it is a hit or miss situation to get a working one.

That trucked should have a carbed 2.8 v6, the computer isn't as big a factor on the carbed engines as it os on the later efi 2.9 and up. May just need to be degunged from setting so long. Might try some seafoam, do a compresion check and hows the carb on it?

Holy jumpin'. I didn't even notice that it was an '84. You really've a classice there fordmanfox. Definitely carbed. It used to be pretty much a standard procedure to overhaul a carb that's sat for a while. It sat for 6 years. I'll tell you from personal experience that you definitely have a gunked up carb. The old fuel evaporates and leaves all that nice varnish behind. It would take forever to redisolve with the fresh gas and there's absolutely no point in expecting it to. There's little check ***** in there that work with the vaccum, and little passages, and a seal @ the float, etc, etc.

You're next step IMO is to rebuild it. Even if it isn't the main part of the problem, but I think it is. Get a gooood quality kit with all the gaskets and new float. Get the manual, it definitely has the carb rebuild step by step.
Soak the parts in carb cleaner overnight, and use compressed air on the passages. I've rebuilt a pile and my favourites have always been the one barrel deals.

Good luck
Fred
