Anyone have any experiance with these 3rd members? I picked one up from a kid that thought it was a 9 inch. The upper horizontal rib bends down on the driver side of the housing. It has 15 pinnion teeth and 42 ring teeth which comes out to 2.8-1 if my math is correct. The member came from a 67 or 68 year model since the pinnion support has a C7AW and everything else is C6AW. I haven't taken it all the way down yet but did split the pinnion support from the 3rd memeber. If anyone has a bit of knowledge please PM with what ever you know. Thanks.
The carrier is of it's own. The OD for the ring gear mounting is larger than that of the 9 inch so swapping 9 inch gears on a 9 3/8 carrier will not happen. If I recall the case should look like a WAR case with two verticle ribs. This case is weaker than the stock single rib 9 inch case. The 9 3/8 canbe used in a 9 inch housing if you notch it for the larger dia. ring gear. Other than that they are pretty much worthless.
I kind of figured that looking for any info on the rear from google. Having a set of 2.8 gears would be nice so I can drive it to and from work though. Luckily I do have an assortment of speedo gears to swap out with it. The 3rd member was sitting in his garage where his dogs shed hair so I have that to deal with but other then that it is decent.
don't say that too loud in the galaxie forums.
people with the 427 and 428 fe engines prize the 9 3/8 center sections, as that is what came with the 7 litre engines.
Ok where is the measurement taken to determine 9" or 9 3/8" third member? I pulled the unit apart tonight to clean it out of all the dog hair and 90w oil. The gears themselves don't show any wear and even still have the factory assembly paint. I measured across the flat machined surface and came up with a 8 15/16s". Am I in the wrong area to measure? With that measurement I am thinking that it really is a 9" with any earlier casting then the typical '68 and up housings. The outside diameter of the timken bearing p/n 25520 are 3.250.
Well I guess it is time to go on a trip to my local library to find some more info on this rear end. That is one good thing about a library card. You have access to all the old reference materials.
