Removing That Stupid Clip On Wastegate?

I stayed under the hood for God knows how long trying to remove the clip on the wastegate. (I want to remove it to tighten the rod) I was using one of those clip removing tools that loks like screw driver shaft with the tip bent over at a 90 deg angle. Since I had no luck with that tool, I am going to try something else. Any suggestions?

Try just a small screw driver, and be carefull it don't go flying off never to be seen again.

Try taping a piece of plastic (i.e. cut open zip lock bag) above and below where you're working and poke your tool through the bag to remove the clip. The bag should then catch it as it flies off and you won't be searching or doing without.

If you do a search for waste gate clips, you should find a NAPA part number for replacement that are easier to install and remove without loosing them. Once I got the replacement clips, I just used a scribed and it came off, still have not found it. Good luck.

This thread has some tips, and my post has the part number that hambonz mentioned:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/4...p-removal.html

I didn't have a pick or anything, so I bent a nail at a 90* angle and gripped it with a pair of vice grips.

I just use a small screw driver and pry it off. I have not lost one from taking it off to adjust. I found out once that on a 300 mile trip, the clip came off and the wg was wide open, no wonder it was smoking so much lol. If you get it off, id suggest just putting a new one on.

If I wanted to clip a new clip ahead of time, could I tell the parts store that I needed a wastegate clip or will I have to buy an assortment?

I put a clip exactly like NAPA part number BK 7352640 on my WG rod. I'm not sure if this part number is the right size or not. I fished mine out of a box of goodies that were laying around the shop. But it looks exactly like the one in the picture and it's very easy to take off and reinstall without losing it. (The clip or your temper. ) It's a sort of little retainer clip that holds itself down over the end of the post.
To remove the clip all you have to do is lift the little clip and slide it backward a bit and it releases. And it does not come off unless you take it off.
