The other day my water pump went out which then threw off the serpentine belt. The belt had wrapped around a few things and started smoking. No big deal, changed out the water pump. Now my brakes are acting really strange. When I apply pressure, you can feel the pedal drop about half an inch, then they engage. The steering feels abnormal as well, both fluid levels are good. So what happened??? Could the belt have screwed up the power steering pump?
I know with diesels, the power steering and brakes work together somehow.
Ya, I just realized that I should go look for any leaks. I did drive it w/o the belt since I was about 1/4 from home (luck!), and when I applied the brakes in the driveway-nothing happened. I really had to press hard on the pedal.
See if whats leaking is red or clear/brown. Power steering fluid should be a redish color possibly a lil brown from age. Brake fluid will be clear or possible brown or black if old and nasty. Brake fluid will eat through paint faster then your eyes can pop out of your head though. Itll take it to bare paint in seconds on some underhood painted surfaces. Try to track down where its leaking from, and exactly what is leaking.
You probably shouldnt drive the truck till you find out whats going on unless youw anna risk the chance of loosing all braking. Doubt it would happen, buut better saef then sorry when it comes to brakes in my opinion.
