Van turbos on Ebay?
Everyone says about the van turbos on ebay but I just can not find them, not even rebuild kits. Anyone know where to look? My tuck smokes some blue on start up for about a min. and am nervous if I have a turbo problem. I don't have the ccv done yet, would that cause some puffs of blue? The pedistal doesn't leak oil. Only does it on start up. Runs fine, boost seems normal ( didn't have gauges in very long ). I didn't get to pull the intake off to pull and push the compresser yet, its been snowing or raining. What do you guys think? Only have 86K on it and didn't think I should have a turbo problem yet.

Jeremy, a turbo problem would persist (and get worse) when the engine has warmed up and you are driving or putting a load on it. If you are smoking a bit after you first crank, it's best to check for a few dead glow plugs. Obviously you have a cold start issue, so the glow plug system is the first place to look.
Start off by first testing the glow plugs. Here are instructions that were originally posted by Cangim:
Hope this helps.
Start off by first testing the glow plugs. Here are instructions that were originally posted by Cangim:
Each valve cover has an electrical connection; each connector has 8 pins. The two outer pins on each side connect to the glowplugs under the cover. The center four pins connect to the injector coils. You'll need a multi meter that can measure ohms. Connect one lead (usually the balck one) to a good ground. Then probe each of the outer pins on the connector. Good glow plugs usually measure between .8 ohms to 1.5 ohms. Some may be outside of that, but won't stray too far.

I have read about cold starts and the glow plug issues and didn't think I had a problem with that since it starts fine when its cold outside. When it is cold it smokes the puffs of blue and white but since its warm its just blueish smoke. Isn't blueish smoke oil burning and white is un burn fuel that you get on cold starts? Thats why I thought it could have been some turbo bushing or a ccv issue. I will check the glow plugs. That would be better and cheeper to replace then the turbo but the turbo would be more fun and would help with some PMS issues.
After reading the way to check the glow plus I have a question. When probing the pins do I turn the key on or do I do everything with the key off?
Thanks a bunch for the help and I hope the rain slows so I can go check the plugs, wish I have a big garage....

ok so I had a chance to get out and check the glow plugs. What do they measure if they are bad? I had some that were stuck on 0 and a few around .8- 1. something and a few that would bounce all over the place. I am not to sure how to use my greenlee meter and am not sure what the ohms symble looks like if someone could help my with that. I think its the upside down horse shoe looking thing on my meter, does that sound right? Also do I need to unplug the harness or something or just stick my needle in around the wire at the harness and ground it? Could bad glow plugs make it smoke blue? Thanks again for all the help guys.

Those who measured 0 were bad and don't come on at all, that means an open circuit. Go back and recheck them, it is possible that your lead wasnt touching the tab and you thought it was. Just to rule that out. A good glow plug is between 1 and 3 ohms, and between 3-5 ohms it is getting weak, and over 5 it is bad.
I am betting the ones that are 0 are the ones that cause the blue smoke due to the fact the cylinder only heats up due to the compression gasses.

OK I did check the turbo for play but pulling and pushing and twisting the compreser wheel, like I was told to do by reading on here, and it was tight. Alittle dusted, no scraping or chips or anything. I did try to check the glow plugs again and still no luck. The truck does start fine though if the plugs are bad. Can that harness be unpluged to make sure I am geting to the pins for a better reading? How do you test the GPR, or is that not my problem? I should just replace everything and be done but I am afraid of tearing the valve covers off....
