lift kit vs. tire size

I have a 2002 f-150 FX4 w/ 5.4L. i was thinking about gettin a 4 in suspension lift and was wondering what the max tire size would be that i can fit without rubbing. i was also wondering about a 6 in suspension lift and the tire size i could fit with that also. Thanks!

My guess is that with just a 4 inch lift you probably don't want to go any higher than a 33, unless you are not going to offroad it much, and then you can ride a 35 with no problem. I am running a 6 inch Fabtech lift with a 3 inch body lift and run 37's with no clearance problems. The guy told me I could run 38's, but I think 37's worked great for me. This model F-150 (97-03) doesn't have the big fender-well space that a lot of other makes have, so the same size lift on a Dodge, for instance, won't equate to the same size tire you can fit, without rubbing. Thanks alot. I was reading up on some of the sites to buy lift kits and some say a 35 will fit on a 4 in lift and then others say that a 33 in is the max size. i was just wondering what ppl use on their truck. im leaning towards a 6 in suspension lift with 35 in tires.

I dont see where you get that from...

I've got 33" tires on my truck, and it's completely stock down to the torsion bar settings. Im confident that I can fit 34's with a slight adjustment to the torsion bars, and not have the tires rub off-road. I've had my truck flexed out many times with these 33's on here and they dont come close to rubbing.

With 4" of lift....I dont see why you wouldnt be able to run 35's easily.

However...backspacing and the width of the wheels (if you run aftermarket wheels) make all the difference when it comes to rubbing or not.

If it were me and my truck...I would see if I could fit 35's-37's with a saw-zall and a BFH. Keeps a lower center of gravity of no lift, with the ground clearance of bigger tires

Thats what i thought. i was gonna go with a pro-comp 4 in suspension lift, pro-comp 17 in rims with 4.5in backspacing and 35 in mickey tompson baja claws.

It will be close, ive just installed the 2" torsion keys and rear 2" blocks and installed the 17x9 DC1 pollished rims and the rims like ATC said makes all the difference in a fit or rub,I installed the goodyear AT Extreme tires 315/70R/17 and with the new torsion keys relaxes on the adjustment blocks, to me is maxed out and not ripping boots up, the guy at 4wheelparts told me the front IFS angles are good to 41 degrees, Im running at 12 degrees and boots are crunched, and the tires rub the inner panel and the front valance, so Im going up with the 3" body lift to get good clearance, which is 5" of clearence, and the tires are about 2.5" to 3" bigger than stock, which I should be fine..I would go with the 6" thats what i wanted but my wife said no..I went the cheaper way out...But you should be close with the 4"...

I don't think you'll be happy with only 4" of lift. Go with the 6" lift. Its not much more. Rize makes a very nice lift. More expensive but very nice.

I agree with everyone here...35's will fit, I just think you'll be happier with the 6 inch lift if you want to fit that size of tire. I looked at another 97 F-150 before I lifted mine that had the 3 inch body lift and 35's and he said his would rub if he was in the process of turning while getting into a rut. He had his torsion bars cranked as well. A buddy of mine that had an 03 Dodge Ram had the same body lift and tire size with no rubbing at all. A 4 inch lift should be enough to keep you from rubbing, but if you can find a 6 inch lift that isn't that much more, I think you'll be happier.

I bet if you posted a poll, a large majority of guys will say they wish they went big the first time around. My buddy started with a 3 inch body lift, then got a 5 inch suspension lift, then sold that lift and got an 8 inch lift so he could get 39's under it. Each time he changed lifts he changed tires. Needless to say, he pissed away a lot of money. So if you have big asperations, go for it the first time. I'm glad I did.

35s will fit...I have them on a 3" body! Hey do you have a garage...if so...YOU wont fit with a 6" trust me...4" YES, it sure beats sitting inside when the rain, hail, and snow comes, haha! Just a thought!!!

I beg to differ. I have a total of 9 inches of lift with 37's and mine fits in the garage. You just have to think ahead. When I built my garage 3 years ago, I thought to myself, "You may build a beast one day, and if you want to keep it in the garage, you're gonna need an 8 foot door on this thing." I can get her in there with about 3 inches to spare! But you're right, a standard 7 foot door and you're screwed. Definately something to think about, especially in the winter when it's freezing....makes it nice when you need to change the oil.

Thanks alot for the feed back and the more i hear/talk about it i found a 6 in lift for only 200$ more dollars then the 4 in. seems to me like a good deal.

If you are heavy on the throttle, or you take your truck off-road often...I would highly suggest getting a lift system that includes rear leaf springs. Blocks lead to a large ammount of axle twisting and wheel hop. Can also lead to broken U-joints and worst-case scenario...a block can be flung out and then your axle can literally fall out.

Yep thats what i found out the 4" is as high as the 6", which 1 you thinking about, I wanted the 6"er and still might get it some day just not right now..But Im installing the 3" body, which I did,nt want to do But since then Ive seen several and if its done right It looks pretty good,My 2" key lift is not quite enough to clear the tires i got for a good deal and i hated to drop down after seeing them mounting on my truck..Holy smokes I love the DC1 polished rim..and The painted black and chrome looks sweet as well.. But if you can go with suspension go for it, the 6" looks good on the 97-03 F150 truck with 35" or so tires and a good rim...Best looking truck around in my opinion...

Liquid 1 I'm clearing 35's with putting new key and aal. I did trim a little on the valance.

im running 315's (just a hair under 35") - with the stock lift (although - i DO have glass fenders)...AND i 4wheel the crap outta this thing...with no issues - except my occassional bad decision.
