need opinions on which stereo system to purchase
well guys, i want a little more bump from it because when you start to crank it, it gets all distorted. so i stopped by a local place today that has a high reputation. all he uses is JL audio, and there one of the best, so ive heard. anyway, they make a sub unit that goes underneath the back seat. and with that, an amp, and a head, it comes to around 1200 bucks, and thats without speakers. i really cant afford that now, so i was wondering what you guys have done. i dont want what those ricer kids have where it shakes the whole car, i was want a nice, quality sound with a little more bass. I remember reading about some place on here that a lot of guys use, but i dont know crap about audio systems, so if anyone can...please help me out

If i were you i wouldnt go to a stereo shop for all that, they will charge u way too much. I got all mine mostly on the internet. I had a jensen flip out dvd/cd player that i got at walmart for $400. Pioneer door speakers ($40), a JBL 12 sub ($75) with a 550 watt jensen amp ($70). It sounds very good and it has alot of bass, but not too much. If you know basic wiring it is not hard to install either.

In my daily driver I have an Eclipse 5442 CD player in the dash, a RF Punch 400 Amp, Kicker 8" truck boxes and JL 6.5" in the doors. It is crystal clear until your ears hurt. The only thing I would do different is steer clear of the Eclipse and install it myself. The only thing I paid to have installed was the CD player and they did a hack job on the half of it they remembered to install. I've got about $600 in the whole system. You can save a ton of money if you wait for sales and aren't concerned with all the components being from the same manufacturer.

I'm running a Eclipse hu with MB Quart 3 way components with the tweeters & 4 inch in Qforms & my 6.5 mid bass in the doors. I have a Q form sub box with2 JL Audio 8inch w3dvc subs. I'm driving it all with a Phoenix Gold Titanium 475 Four channel amp. I have great sound & it doesn't take up much cab space. The sub box I'm using is about the same size as the JL Audio box but I have less $ in it with better subs than the JL box with subs cost

$1200 is WAAAAY too much for what they want to do! Stay away from that shop.
I bought a brand spankin new Pioneer 12" sub off my friend for $60 (you can get them for around that online now), a Q-Logic truck box from Crutchfield ($80), and a Profile 700W amp from Crutchfield ($130). The amp has a 3 year warranty on it through Crutchfield...which is a big reason why I went with them.
I bought a generic installation kit from Wal*Mart and used thoes wires. My friend and I hooked it up ourselves in under an hour...which includes running the wires under the trim panels and setting the sound up the way I like it. However...if you dont have someone that knows what they are doing...Crutchfield has an excellent installation guide that they send with the product you buy.
Anyways....here are a couple pics:
