I was going to change my driveshaft bearings this weekend because I had developed a progressive shudder and wicked vibration that felt like it was in the middle of the truck. I couldn't even drive 35 without shaking too much.
I started by getting the four 12 point bolts off of the pinion yoke I was going to remove the carrier bearing bolts. After one attempt with a six point socket I successfully made that bolt a 52 point head. While the frustration was growing with rust frozen bolts I decided to drop the back half of the ds so that I was making some progress.
After a bang of the hammer the ds came loose and the bad news shortly followed--fluid. I must have worn out my 8.8
Here's the good news--I have another differential!
Not only do I another 8.8 that I rebuilt this winter, but the best part is that I have another differential on the truck! I have been driving around the past two days with my front diff only
I will do the swap this weekend and post my success (hopefully).
If any of you guys are on the fence about 4x4 take it from me it is worth it just to have the security.
Good luck things happen . Its nice it wasn't me for a change. No offense. Thats way Ive been rebuilding parts off my parts trucks . If I need it its there and if I need money I can sell it rebuilt Gook luck
Me too. I have an entire spare powertrain for my truck ready to go. I just turned 150 so I was expecting the auto to go. It was a bit of a surprise that the diff went, but I have had a few weeks of rediculous tows lately.
It happens. The only thing worse would have been not being prepared. This should cost me about $700 in parts and a weekend. No biggie.
