Dyed Diesel in 6.0

My cousin has a 2005 6.0 He said that if he runs offroad diesel in his truck it will mess up the emission controls on it. I am talking about regular diesel not ULSD.

Is this true?

There is no difference (leaving ULSD out of this discussion). It's just a red dye to signify it's the tax-credited fuel for farm use.

But unless you're running the farm plates, better hope you don't get stopped and get "dipped".

I work on a dairy/grain farm and grew up on a farm and know some people who got their tanks dipped and fines were definitely stiff.

I didn't think it would matter if he ran farm fuel or not, but he said it would mess with his emission controls. I just wanted to make sure I was right before I discussed it with him.

Would this cause any damage to the engine? If so, how soon will it show up? one tank, 1000 miles, what?

As we are tax exempt, we legally use dyed fuel in our 2004 E-450 6.0 and have for 70,000 trouble free miles.

And read this below, it was posted in the 6.4 forum;

You have to look at the pump label as the red dye fuel could be ULSD, LSD, or non-highway fuel. See below.

OVERVIEW OF RED DYE FUELfficeffice" /><O></O>

"Red Dye" in Diesel Fuel has historically been used to identify fuels that have been formulated for non-highway or off-road use (sulfur content above 500 ppm). With the introduction of Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel fuel (ULSD), the EPA has eliminated the "Red Dye" requirement and instead developed new pump labels that are required to enable fuel users to identify the sulfur content of diesel fuel. Refer to the Attachment for a graphic of the fuel pump labels. <O></O>

<O> </O>DIFFERENT PURPOSE FOR RED DYE FUEL<O></O>

It should be noted that the IRS has required the use of a similar "Red Dye" for a completely different purpose, which is to identify diesel fuel that is non-taxed. This has created the possibility to have a Red Dye fuel that meets highway requirements, which has caused confusion in the market place. It is no longer possible to determine fuel quality based on the presence or absence of Red Dye.<O></O>

Thanks for all the replies, I will definitely be able to tell him that his truck will be fine on Farm fuel. Chances are he won't use it bc of the risk but atleast he will know if he is in a pinch it will run fine.

Odds are great that his "farm fuel" is actually just dyed low sulfer diesel which won't harm his 6.0.
