To me,
Unless it says in the badging "Super Camper Special" it is something else...unless it can be proven on the build sheet. If Ford dropped the "Super" wording in a certain year then that would be the final year of the Super Camper Special. Of course there are exceptions such as if its a victim of a bad resto in which it lost its markings...but...unless it is designated as a Super Camper its one of the following:

1) A Camper Special-Similar to Super Camper Special but still NOT a Super Camper Special

2)A Trailer Special

3) A Regular F-350 with the bed ordered as an option from Ford by the original purchaser.

You can't make a truck into something it isnt..... just because it is similar....it still doesnt change the fact that in actuallity it is not what you are trying to make it. If they dropped the "Super" designation after 76 then that was the end of them and anything else afterward is simply not a true SCS.

Let me point out I'm not attacking anyone when Im saying this I'm jsut trying to help clarify things a bit seeing as Ford had so many trim levels, options and option packages that could even be altered for an original purchaser.

enough to read it.

Thanks, Dan

That would be the "CAMPER SPECIAL" fender badges when ordered with the CS package.

Should say "Trailer Special" if you look on pg. 16 you'll see the "Camper Special" emblem.

The Trailer Special badge is put on the bottom center of the tailgate. Only one Trailer Special badge. Camper Special badges went on both fenders in the same place as the Crew Cab badges do.

Dsep, Good question. One ref I have shows 1984 as the final year, the other reference says 1986. The parts book lists a Camper Special nameplate through 1986.

I'll defer to what Dennis says.

If you look on pg.12 youll see that truck has a tool box and not the Camper Wheel well. Hence that truck cant be a Camper Special and wouldnt have the badges for it.

Guess I would like to see them both now up close...did the emblems look
different for certian years?

Both seem to look different than the ones on my truck...Hope some can post a pic of them up close. With my monitor I cant tell at all really what they look like.

Well,
The "Camper Special" emblem on 16 has a red background to it w/ white lettering....and the one on 13 has red w/ red....so I dunno. If it doesnt read "Trailer Special" then maybey its the trim level....Lariat....XLT..ect?

CAMPER
SPECIAL

Only one Camper Special nameplate is listed in the exterior trim section. It appears to be a dark lettering on a light background. The emblem is rectangular. See sample.

D7TZ-16720-AD .. Emblem, Camper Special (this is an updated Ford part number and you know what that means...it replaced any and all previous nameplates),
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are three Trailer Special nameplates listed. One for the tailgate and one each for the right/left 'cab.'

1973 = D3TZ-16720-Y .. Nameplate, R/L Trailer Special-Cab

1974/76 = D4TZ-16720-F .. Nameplate, R/L Trailer Special-Cab

D6UZ-1142528-A, Nameplate, Trailer Special-Tailgate

Note that the tailgate nameplate is an Econoline (U) part number.

Yes, Econolines not only had Trailer Specials, but Camper Specials as well.

I don't trust that brochure. Ford used the same pictures for most items all the way from 1973! I have a copy of the 1979 pickups brochure in my possession, and it was clearly a running change edit after I looked at it.

And I should note, the trailer special emblem was placed on the tailgate on later years. Perhaps 1977.5-1979. I don't know where they were stuck on earlier years.

Build sheet for a 79 F-350 4x4 Super Cab that that has Camper Special badges on both front fenders. They are unrestored red background with chrome lettering. Don't think there's any close up pics of them in my gallery.

See though,
The whole thing thats supposedly the defining characteristic of a "Camper Special" or SCS is the big ole wheel well...correct? (At least according to the brochure)

And neither the truck in the brochure or yours has it....so that must mean that in 76-79 the Camper Specials must have been designated by some other aspect...so....

Maybe its the presence of the plug for the slide in and beefier suspension for the 76-79's that denotes a "Camper Special"

And a side mounted spare for 73-75-ish along with the other options that denotes a "Camper Special" or even SCS. If thats the case then the one in the brochure on pgs. 12 &13 could be a "Camper Special" ....but its still a mystery as to why the badge would look like its red w/ red
-Chris

Edit:

My only other thought on how to explain so much variation in the definitions of whats what is that Ford just slapped together what they thought would look good and stuck a fancy "package" name on it to lure in buyers lol

I would think the List I posted in post #12 would denote what a camper special consists of.

Meanwhile I'll look through my 1975 Recreational Vehicle Brochure and post the info.

What is the difference in the wheel well from the early SCSs from the
77-79 Camper Specials?

I am in and out of the house so I may/will post when I get back in...
