I purchased new air/vent ***** from Dennis Carpenter and notice they have a brass threaded center whereas the original ***** on my 59 p/u are not. The original look like they were pressed onto what looks like barbs on the cable side. To install new ***** does one run a die over the cable shaft that matches the same thread as the new **** or are there correct ***** to purchase like the original style??
It sounds like you were sent the wrong *****. ***** into the mid 60's were pressed onto a barbed clip that slide over the shaft and locked on. Try calling them to see what they say before you thread your cable shafts.

The ***** were originally white with white centers. Pictures in the parts book show ***** coming with air vent cables as an assembly (B9C-8101890-A) only. These ***** were only sold with the cables back then. You might give 'ol Dennis a call, to find out if A: They sold you the correct parts, and B: What's the trick to installing them.

Finished both L/R vents and choke cables tonight with no problems. Most original ***** on the dash I have seen are oxidized and deteriorated to point they crumble in your hands. What worked real slick to remove old ***** is put them up against a wire wheel on your grinder and the old material comes off like chalk.
