Angry My power steering pump blow up?

I started my truck (´89 F150 4.9l+5sp) today and i had to shut it down immediately,it sounded awful!
REALLY loud ratling sound came from my PS pump (i think),if i put my hand on it,i can feel it also. No way i´m gonna drive that thing. It have been whining a little all the time but there is enough oil in it so i haven´t worried about it.
Is there anything i can do about it or should i just buy a new one?

This sucks!

You can get other one . I put a Saginaw pump off 90's E-van on mine its a lot better. You'll need mount for same engine size and hoses. There are other pumps out there that bolt right in as well as stock ones . Good luck on search

Before you go buying anything, make sure it's the P/S pump. Loosen the belt and turn all your pulleys (P/S, A/C, water pump, air pump, alt) by hand. They should spin freely. Wiggle them front to rear to see if the bearings are ok. If it is the P/S pump, do like Lost said and replace it. At least around here you can get a salvage yard pump relatively inexpensively. I'm told the really big tire guys like some of those Saginaw pumps because they reduce turning effort. Since you're in Finland, if you can't get a Ford pump for a reasonable price, try finding a '90-'93 Saab 900 with 2.0 or 2.1L engine. You'll have to do some fabricating but it's a nice small Saginaw type 2 pump that uses a remote reservoir.

Hi guys.

Knocking comes definitely from PS pump, and it´s really loud.if I put my hand on it,I can feel it vibrate everytime I hear that knock.
But steering works ok whatsoever? Tires turn easily when I turn steering wheel and sound doesn´t change when i do that.

I took the belt off and tried to spin idler,AC and PS pump pulleys, and they all spin freely and dont make any sound when turned by hand. PS pump pulley had pretty big axial movement, does it matter?
The plastic idler pulley has pretty loose bearing but it also doesn´t make any noise when turned by hand.
AC pulley turned freely also.

My buddy sells carparts,he can get me a new pump for 128Euros,thats about 165USD.I would also buy that plastic idler pulley. He told me I can get them as soon as this friday.
And I rather buy correct Ford part, but i will ask how much that Saab pump would cost also.

From your description that axial movement probably means the bearing has gone out on the P/S pump. The parts inside are probably moving forward and backward and making the banging noise.

I was trying to find you something that might be more readily available used or from a salvage yard in Europe. I bought the same pump (AC Delco part # 36-516327) from a salvage yard with bracket and serpentine pulley for US$25 plus $10 core charge; about 27 euros total. The pump itself if bought remanufactured goes for $60 + $15 core charge (~58 euros). This pump uses a remote reservoir so you would have to factor that cost in as well.

Pump is now ordered and it should arrive tomorrow. But they could not get the idler pulley(or is it belt tensioner pulley???),it would take atleast 2 weeks to arrive so I will order it by myself. The problem is,where I can get to right one?

I checked rockautos site and there is several options,I dont know what I should buy?
Or should I get that whole belt tensioner assembly?

If the pulley is bad but the tensioner is ok, why replace the tensioner? It looks to me that the tensioner pulley you need is for a 1987-1995 4.9L. I found this on the LMC website:

http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/fd/0094.asp

Look at picture 5 and part # 43-2279

I suppose Rock or NPD (National Parts Depot a site sponsor) would have the same thing.

Hi.

Yes, tensioner works fine so maybe I dont need the whole assembly, just the pulley. I just though that it wont cost that much more so maybe I´ll just replace that whole damn thing.

Here´s rockautos site,hope it works:
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,carcode,1121836,parttype,6956

I was surprised that there is different part numbers for manuals and automatics and with or without AC,so will this one work for me?
MOTORCRAFT Part # YS181 {#E8TZ8678E}
Factory Installed; (Pulley Assy) 10.64$

Its cheapest of them all. Or shoud i just buy this one and stop asking stupid questions?! Maybe i should....

I don't know what the difference would be between those two pulleys. It looks to me like the more expensive one (E8TZ8620S) is the one that goes on your truck. There is a fellow site member called numberdummy that is a retired Ford parts man. He seems to have access to info on what part is right. Send him a pm and ask what the difference is between those two parts. Maybe in the meantime someone who knows will see this and post the answer.

Now it seems that this partnumber is for the belt itself?
MOTORCRAFT Part # JK6996C {#E8TZ8620S}
Standard trans.; w/AC

Found this from ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/oem-new-jk6996c-drive-belt-e250-e350-e150_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ38656QQitemZ160069 226471QQtcZphoto

Man,i´ll just order that cheapest pulley and see what they send to me!

That's probably the pulley that goes with that belt on the E150-350 Vans, 4.9L, w/o AC 1992 - 1996. Different diameter pulleys will mean different length belts. It may not be a lot but it could change whether your belt still fits. In your place for the extra $10 over the cheap pulley I would order the one that belongs on your truck and not risk it not fitting or having to buy a new $30 belt.

Oops,i allready ordered it. So now I just have to wait and see...

But hey,no more knocking sound,I just got my P/S pump replaced!
No whining either.. aah,it sounds so nice and quiet.
Everything else was easy but man, that pulley was really tight! It took me at least 2 hours to get it off.

The p/s pulley can be a real bear to get off. As far as that tensioner pulley, try it and see if it works. If it does, great-you saved $10. If not, you just have to get one that does.
