Hey, The dash pad on my 79 F-150 is cracked, rotten, and falling to pieces. How much trouble is it to remove and how would it look with no pad? Is the metal underneath a solid piece or does it have slots or holes in it? This is just my knock around the mountains truck and not real particular about the looks, but don't want to ugly it up worse than it already is either! Thanks for your help and info. Sammy
There are 7 nuts that hold the dash pad on, use a 11/32 or 9mm. You will have to use a wrentch to get some off them off. Kind of a pain to get off. Here are some pics of where they are located.
You could also get some thin carpet and adhesive to make your own dash cover. Kind of a pain in the butt to do and I'm not sure of the long term hold up, but I had an old pad cracked up and this is how mine turned out. Cost me about $12 to do. I just wanted to see how it would turn out. If it didn't, than I wasn't out too much.
anybody ever tried anything other than new carpet to fix the dash pad? Maybe take the rubber/vinyl coating off and bondo over the whole thing? Fiberglass?
My dash pad is in great shape, but I don't like the color so I was going to take an old beat up one I had lying around and try and make it look a bit better.
Chase-
Nothing new here im sure, but i just (an hour ago) sprayed my dash cover with dupli-color's vinyl and fabric coating. Unlike paint, it seems to get into the natural grooves of the original vinyl. I couldnt be happier with the result for about 5 bucks. It also did a great job in the vinyl of my bench seat. I'll try to get some pictures up one of these days. but that product gets my thumbs up. anyone else use it?
The fiberglass idea sounds good but am i the only one who daydreams about the endless uses of fiberglass but never actually does any of them? ex, door panels, dash covers, head liners, glove boxes...etc.
good to hear. I'd love to see pics of your dash pad when you get around to it. Also, did you do anything special first - like fill in any cracks, or did you just spray and go?
I'm not a big fan of fiberglass (too lazy to ever make anything with it besides repairing my surf board), but I do like it's potential due to strength and versatility.
nope, just wiped it down and sprayed, i poured a little bit of fiberglass on the back where the clip holds the pad to the metal dash because it was loose. But other than that it was good to go. i took some pictures but this computer is about as old as the truck so no luck uploading today.
Hey masterbeavis, next time you find a cherry dash pad you wanna give me a message? Mine is one of the reproductions that lasted about two years before it developed two huge cracks. Don't ever buy one from LMC - they're junk. The only decent ones are the Dennis Carpenter ones for $300, so if you're willing to sell one for less than that I'd be pretty interested.
