I've got a 06 explorer with a 4x4 problem that occurs when turning. With 4x4 high on, when you make a left or right hand turn, a clunking noise occurs (the entire truck shudders)... then a grinding/rubbing noise for the duration of the turn, followed by another clunk (entire truck shudders) at the completion of the turn.

We've used 4x4 in the past with no issues. This problem arose for the first time yesterday.

Anything ideas? I want to go to the dealer with as much info as possible...

if in four hi going around corners if road is dry that is a normal condition.all 4x4 do this

 

if the surface you are driving on is pavement with no snow or ice your drivetrain will bind. it is very hard on it. when in 4x4 your tires are being forced to rotate at the same speed when you turn. For example if you make a left turn your right tires need to spin faster than the left tires and on snow, ice, dirt etc... your tires are allowed to slip. Make sure it is in 4x4 auto or 2wd mode.

 

The road was not dry. This first occured during the tail end of our last snow storm. I had to drive to work during a prior storm a month or so ago and did not experience this condition (nor did it occur during other snow filled trips).

 

This I am aware of. I do not manually engage 4x4 if the roads are dry (truck remains in 4x4 auto during normal conditions... it doesn't have a 2wd option/button).


I have not experienced this problem before this last snow fall.

 

If it's binding in a turn, it could very well be a CV joint on the axle. How many miles? Is it still in warranty? If so, I'd make it some dealers problem.

 

My truck just hit 7k miles, so it is well under warranty. I'm worried that they will give me the 'nothing is wrong' song and dance.

 

Find a dirt area near the dealer and get them to test ride with you. If you scout the area first, you might find a good area and try it before going with them.

 

Its sounds like by your description that it will be simple for the dealer to agree there's a problem and with it under warranty hopefully they'll take good care of you
