Bronco Is Too Slow

Anyone know how to turn off the governor on a 1996 Bronco. I think it tops out at around 100 or so. The speedo only goes to 85, so this is sort of a guess. If you know how to turn that derned governor off, let me know. I'd appreciate it.

Yeah, why would you want a Bronco to go over 100 mph? If you are going to turn that thing off, you might as well go ahead and install a roll cage cuz when you lose control at that speed, youz gonna roll, roll and roll.

I even have a '69 Mach 1 w/ a 428cj ram-air that I do not want to go over 100mph with (but it could very easily). I also have a '79 Bronco that rarely exceeds 65 mph, mainly due to the fact that I respect its capabilities and have no desire to die at age 38. Nor is it the most well-designed vehicle for speed.

Bronco Is Too Slow

Hey guys, lets try to remember that we're here to help with questions. Weather or not we agree with what a person is doing doesn't really matter. If he wants to go over 100, then let him try it. Unfortunately, I do not know how to do this, but hopefully someone else will. Good luck.

My Bronco is nice and smooth at 85 (90 with the speed correction for 33's). But that's only on the way to Mexico- nice flat roads, basically straight. I'm always in a hurry to get there. Otherwise 75-80 is usually fine.
100 would be a bit much.

Bronco Is Too Slow

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Sep-02 AT 02:30 AM (EST)]I would say that the way to get rid of the gov. is to put an aftermarket chip in it. Most of them eliminate the top speed limiter. I am not sure if your bronco has a speed limiter on it though. 100 might be its top speed, you have to consider this truck weighs somewhere around 5,200 lb. I hope you don't live around me!

OK i know its a bronco but i do about 85-90 on the freeways. My truck has gotten to 118mph and just couldnt do no more. i had my friend in his honda S2000 pace me we could not believe it. Was tachin out around 4500rpm. Good thing about AZ long straight roads. I've only done this once though was really scary and dangerous will probably never do it again.

I don't find anything wrong with wanting to drive a Bronco 100 mph. However my 90 5.8 is such a slug that I hardly want to cruise at 75 unless it's a flat road. Any rises in the highway and you have to give it gas etc. I can't believe a big V8 can be so underpowered, and it is running properly too. That's just how it is. Anyway, I have driven cars upwards of 150 mph, a 1970 GTO with a 455 and a 2.90 rear end for example, and a 73 Buick Regal with a 455 and a 2.63, you figure it out. Not to mention late 60's Cadillacs with 472's, low final drive ratios, and constant velocity driveshafts... I also regularly ride my Harley over 100 mph, the best I've ever gotten it to is also 118 mph. With that all said though, I have no need to take my Bronco over about 85 mph. But if it had a built 351 or a 460, I would have no problem cruising it over 100.

Well, the way I see it - is you may need that speed to get to the PARTS sales at your local parts shops. Perhaps to hit the best fishing spots on the weekend - that is why many fishermen are buying the 150hp outboards for their watercrafts.

If you want to work the engine in your Bronco for better performance, more HPs and such - its a good thing - for climbing the steep trails in the Rocky's you might want more torque to them wheels - but to make a racer out of a 4x4 makes little sense to this Canuck.

I know with my truck, 100 mph - would be likened to a re-entry feeling for the space shuttle - shudder shudder - where's my mirrors and tailpipe?

On the serious side - you have to de-chip/re-chip the bugger.

That is my 2 cents worth (about a nickle here in Canada)

Cheers

OJ never sped while being chased from the police. It's a bronco, trying driving across fields to loose the law man.

Happy moving at 45 mph.

That "governer" is programmed in to prevent you from over revving the engine & grenading it. Before changing the chip I'd think really seriously about building the engine for running steadily at the high RPM.

Another consideration is your transmission. At that kind of speed you are generating a tremendous amout of heat in the tranny, it's going to need some special attention as well.

Finally, your tires most likely aren't speed rated, since they're probably light truck tires. The heat generated at very high speeds will cause them to fail...dramatically, and often as not fatally for all the passengers & innocent others in the vicinity.

If you really feel you need to drive at those speeds you should get rid of the Bronco, it simply isn't made for that. And hope you don't pass me on the road going that fast, I'll call the cops in a heartbeat when someone is driving that recklessly around me.
