hello everybody I have a 1975 f150 360v8 longbed with dual gas tanks the aux tank doesn't work for some reason, when I got the truck someone bybass the aux tank only reason I know I looked under the truck and notice the aux wasn't connected Anyways my problem is that the fuel gauge always read a full tank when the truck is on but it goes down when the truck is off does anybody might know whats causing this. could it be a electrical or the sending unit.
Yes it is supposed to read the proper level when the switch is on and nothing when the key is off. If it reads over full the sending unit is bad, or the wire is shorted, or the instrument panel voltage regulator has lost it's ground connection. Check the Read First: FAQ thread at the top of the 73-9 forum for gage repair info.
Go to the tank in question and trace the wire from the sender unit back thru the switches to the gage. If you disconnect the wire at the sender and the gage falls to empty the sender is bad. If there is no change then one of the other items is bad. If the instrument panel voltage regulator (on the back of the instrument panel) has lost it's ground connection ALL of the gages will peg to the right.
now if the instrument panel voltage regulator lost its ground it would've effect all the other gauges correct, so most likely could it be the wiring to the tank or the sending unit.
