Brakes sticking

97 f-150 4x4 4.6l Autotranny the breaks stick but not hard, it only sticks enough to stop it from a slow roll in neutural. Still brakes fine when needed, just doesn't quite release all the way. What yall think?

Take them apart and grease caliper pins and everything that moves on the break system with white lithium grease. Make sure that everything slides nicely before putting it all back together.

You might have to clean up some corrosion first.

Lightbulb Slight brake grab?

Hi carova_kevin, Let's work on a new concept...finding the problem and then making a repair that fixes it.
It sounds to me like you could have an emergency brake sticking. Do you use the emergency brake and if yes does the pedal come all the way back up? Hold the brake release out and try lifting up on the parking brake pedal with your foot. Pulling the brake system apart and cleaning it and lubing it won't repair your problem if it as simple as a corroded parking brake cable. You'll need to jack the truck up and find out which one or more of the brakes are rubbing. Do you have disk in the rear? Are there any unusal noises coming from the brakes? Have you done anything lately to the truck that may be related to this new found problem? Does your brake pedal vibrate or feel soft upon brake application while moving? Does the truck pull in one direction or the other when you apply the brakes? Let us know. Joe

Well, I hope that it has healed itself. It may come back to haunt you.

being a 97 i would actually replace your calipers next time you do brakes and do a good brake flush on them. Otherwise what will happen is that next time your on a trip somewhere they will stick and not come unstuck and it will be really inconvenient. Being a 4.6 i'm assuming you have rear drum brakes so it is possible they may need adjustment as well. Good luck, and like 3 rangers was getting at, dont just let something like this go, because it will eventually come back at a really inconvenient time. My rangers rotor got so hot that it was glowing red, as you drove it it would pull to the right, and as you hit the brakes it would pull severly to the left, i couldnt drive it more than 30 the way it was.

Peter94,
You bring up a good point. When I'm troubleshooting a problem like this, the one "HOT" brake is a good indicator of where the problem is.

Hey Guys, I usually check for a warm or hot wheel center too. But being as some of the posters aren't so mechanically inclined I am sometimes afraid to suggest that they check it that way. But to me...it is the fastest and best way to find the trouble spot. Joe

Well, as soon as the paramedics leave and this palm sized blister heals and the skin grows back...I'll fix those brakes...LOL
Take care...Joe
