Let's not forget that in the old glory days of NASCAR, besides the "souped up" motors, you could buy the same "looking" car in any showroom. So, if you wanted to buy a copy of a Freddy Lorenzen Galaxie or Joe Weatherly Mercury with a toploader 4 speed and the 427 engine, all you had to do was waltz into your local Ford or Mercury dealer and buy one.

Try that today...uh huh...let's see, I want a new Ford 2 door with a Chevrolet Monte Carlo body on a custom chassis with a specially built OHV V8 engine, and a four barrel carb.

Lemme know when you find one.

Why is NASCAR popular?...think...Reality Shows. The same reason why police chasing bad guys on shows like The World's Wildest Police Videos are so popular....the word is unscripted ....anything can happen.

Having drivers that look like they just walked out of Central Casting is another reason. It's all about the drivers today. The cars, powerplants, and "Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday" is yesterdays news.

The Toyota Camry in NASCAR...somehow, I don't see too many people that drive those ricer tuner cars with the fart can exhaust extensions attending a NASCAR race. What NASCAR really wants is Toyota advertising dollars, Toyota sponsorship, Toyota promoting NASCAR...so, bottom line...it's all about money.

A perfect example of your Central Casting comment is Micheal Waltrip. IMO the guy has proven himself over and over again that he can't drive. Both of his own cars made the race last weekend and he was the only one in his own race team who didn't. But you know what, Napa loves the guy because he has charactor and is very well known. He can thank his brother for that.
If he couldn't cut it with a team like DEI he sure isn't going to do squat with what he has now. I guess one can argue that he has won the 500 twice but Derrick Cope has won it too. "Nuff said"

You hit it perfectly Number, mo' money, mo' money, mo' money. I will still watch it religiously though....

Yes I do believe that the newer generation cares about the fact that is "used to be" Stock racing. I am 35 years old(not exactly young but not an old fart either!) and that is what drew me into Nascar about 20 yrs. ago. I wanted to see how the small block Ford fared against the small block chebby. I am sure that is true for many of the die hard gear-headed grease monkeys like me. Also I am not saying that Toyota can not build a push rod engine, what I am saying is that isn't it going to be easier for Toyota to build a killer engine after seeing what has and hasn't worked for the last twenty years? Like I said before and I will say again I have nothing against the foreign machines(by the way I believe that Honda is one of the best engine designer/builders in the world seeing how they whip anyone in any series once they decide to) I am just saying that the ones that made Nascar popular are at an unfair advantage! Can you feel me smuggs? Do you know where I am coming from? NOW Nuff said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Ok do you have anything else you would like to share with the class because you have been repeating yourself in your last 3 posts. Ok, I get it, you think it's not fair.

I can't see your logic about unfair. Here I go repeating myself, but what advantage does Toyota have? NASCAR is not letting them have 15 extra horsepower here or there or giving them "special parts". Who won the last race, a FORD, is that fair for Dodge ( and I know Dodge was in NASCAR in the "gearheaded grease-monkey days )and Toyota because they are the new comers of late and Chevy and Ford are still winning the majority of races?

NASCAR gives everyone the same blueprint. Here is another example and see if you can follow. Just say you bought a brand new house from a contractor and 4 doors down the same contractor builds the exact same house just with different looking windows and different colors. Are you going to play the "no fair" card.

And no "Smuggs wont' feel you" he is a happily married man.

"NOW Nuff said"

I sure hope so.......

Wow, 35 going on 5.

Have you always cried this hard when you have been beat. I guess if you can't play nice you should pick up your ball (s) or lack of and leave.

Don't trip on your bottom lip on the way out.

Now that clown face would fit in perfect here.......

I've been watching, and attending NASCAR races for years...Riverside International Raceway (Dan Gurney usually won), and Ontario Motor Speedway (both long gone). And now the new California Motor Speedway.

I'm still a fan, and..at 62, an old fahrt!

Being a veteran Nascar fan of 20 years, who currently is 'Your Guy', or driver (if you have one)?

Just curious.

don't worry about Toyota having an advantage when the car of tomorrow starts racing. it will be just like an IROC race then, with the only differences being in the engines. I was watching the special on SPEED channel on the COT and they said all brands will have to fit the same set of templates. the only way you are going to know if it is a ford, dodge, chevy, toyota is by looking at the sticker they put on the grill. Give me a break already,i think this is my last season of actually watching nascar, starting next year I will be just reading the headlines in the paper on monday.

cjben,
Those are my feelings exactly. I do not follow and watch each race like I have in the past. I am starting to watch v8 supercars and F1 more and more.
