Got my oil results back from the lab.

Good evening everyone. I recieved my oil results today and all was fine except the iron was 143. I use Rotella Syn. the new cj-4 had 5128 miles on the oil truck has 116,134. They recomend 3,000 mile changes to get rid of the iron particles. TBN was 11.1 witch suggests I could extend intervals since 1 is low. My concern is the iron what do you all think?

Cylinders, rotating shafts, the valve train, and any steel part sharing the oil. Any fuel dilution or antifreeze present?

Iron is high, I was told that oil is doing a good job if it can keep the iron under 20 (at @ 2500 miles) and is doing an excellent job if it keeps it in the single digits. Chevron Delo 400 15W-40 is a good at keeping the iron down, if you want a synthetic Schaeffer's 7000 or 9000 will yield low iron numbers also.

When my iron went up high I changed over to the Chevron Delo 400 and it worked great, came down from 38 to 17 at 5,000 miles checks using Blackstone Labs. I plan to switch to schaeffers to start running the extended oil changes again.

Are you running any type of bypass filter?

You will hear all kinds of recommendations when it comes to oil, the only truth is what the oil anaylsis reports actually say.

Just for info, my Lab results showed Iron as 13 with 5694 miles (Rotella 5-40 Synthetic), truck had 73398 and 0 quarts make-up added, TBN 11.6. Like I said this is just for info to give you another number to consider. Sorry, I wish I could also provide an answer for your numbers.

Hope this helps.

Their was no water or antifreeze, and <0.5% fuel. No I am not running a oil bypass but plan to add one. I needed a good reason not to spend the $17 a gallon. I think I will switch back to Delo, At least I don't have to drive 45 minutes to get it. They also asked how the truck is running because of the iron. It runs awsome except when taking of or just putting around on and of the throttle lightly it seems to have a miss like all the injectors aren't firing then as rpms increase it goes away. It is very hard to duplicate as it is a narrow rpm band that it happens in.
Sorry for the blabbing but i'm a little flustered by the iron numbers.

Just out of curiosity, since I just mailed mine in for the first time today (thanks FTE) whats the turnaround time like from sending it to having a sheet of paper in your paws?

I ussually get the report via e-mail three to four days after the package leaves my hand. Blackstone labs has a great turn around time. I would set up the e-mail delivery so you don't have to wait for the mail.

I sent three samples to OilGuard Saturday before last, and sent them UPS ground to avoid the USPS hassles and shorten the delivery time a bit. They got the samples last Friday, ran them yesterday, and posted the results this morning. I'm trying to work up a table to compare the sample results. Basically, almost everything was nil except the iron, which was 20 (if I remember right). The oil had at least 5K miles, being alreayd in the engine when I got it last September. Don't know what oil it was, but I never had to add a drop in teh 5K miles, and didn't put on my bypass system until after draining that oil out.

Correction on my iron... it was actually only "5" !!

It was the sodium that was "20".

All my results are in this thread linked below... posts #531-536. I had to break up the data into multiple posts due to the high number of "characters" (alphanumeric, that is... not the FTE characters you may think I was referring to)
