We'll see. Rumor has it that the Tundra diesel is due for 2008. It's not about who comes out first with one but which one will be more powerful with good gas mileage and durable. Based on Toyota's reputation, I would not bet against Toyota.

Toyota has been making a diesel in their light trucks for years in Europe, Africa & South America. Maybe Ford should patch things up with Navstar.

In reality, Yota is just doing what it always has been doing. Making products that people want, at prices they know people will pay, and profitting.

Domestics have been making products that they think we will want, but don't, at a loss, and leaning on truck sales to make ends meet.

Along comes $3 per gallon gas. 12MPG average truck sales tank. Domestic car quality is in the crapper and has been for some time. Yota is known for quality and good mileage. They sell well, and for a profit.

$3/gallon gas was just the straw that broke the back. It was coming slowly, but surely. Gas prices just sped things up.

Toyota is doing well because of what they have been doing and domestics are doing poorly because of what they have been doing.

Blaming domestic auto maker failure on Toyota and other foreign auto makers is unfounded. They are both just getting the fruits of thier labor, bitter or sweet.

couldn't say it better myself.

even though I'm a Big Ford/Gm fan... the situation that they are in is there is there fault .. if they would have taken the time 30+ years ago they wouldn't even be all these problems.. They laid their bed now they gotta lie in it and I dont feel sorry for them not at all. I for one haven't lost one bit of sleep because Ford Motor company lost 12 Billion Dollars last year and I bet my bottom dollar that you haven't either..

On another note FORD's management needs to stop being so shortsided and stop blaming the UAW for all they losses.. If they were building cars like they should have instead of just slapping a badge on pile a crap they wouldn't be where they are today.. take a look back at some of the previous ford's/ Gm's like the Contour, 2 gen Taurus, Azteck, fiestiva, aspire, alero.etc etc. I mean come on who the hell wants those. I'm "brand Loyal" and all but just because its a blue-oval or a bowtie does NOT mean that I will own it. I believe that there is an internal problem at the FORD MOTOR COMPANY and closing plants and laying off 38,000 workers is not the right answer ..

But then again have you ever thought that they just might be coming to an end. Law of physics: what goes up eventually must come down.. Maybe their on the course of life like us humans. continue to go up until we "peak" and then go down. I most certainly hope this is not it. But if managment doesn't get their *** together that's just what will happen.

I'm also sorry to say this but i dont think ford needs to stop concentrating so much on trucks but instead start focusing more on cars. I'm sorry but this latest "horsepower" war is ridiculous. and by the time ford gets involved it will already be to late.. I mean maybe have one high-performance motor but for the most part they really need to work on getting 20+ MPG out of the F150. when 3.50 a gallon for gas is the norm ( and we all know this will happen ) who will be buying these 350+ horsepower trucks with 10 MPG?? no-one... and who's gonna hurt out of all this?? the "Big 3". Toyota wont simply because they have a CAR line to fall back on which i just dont think they have.

Ford is concentrating on cars. They restyled the bland 500, and at Mulally's urging gave it a more recognizable name. And before y'all say anything...this will be the best Taurus ever. The last versions, especially the 1986/94's were terrible cars fraught with brake and transmission problems, both of which were unresolved. Ever see a melted caliper? The brakes got so hot on the 86/94's because of insufficent airflow, that calipers melted, and some cars caught on fire.

On the brighter side, the Fusion will be soon be offered in a coupe version.

Those are 2.5L and 3.0L in Hilux (Tacoma). I think they're too small for Tundra.

True enough, but it's more than Ford has been doing. My point is that, if Ford was listening to their customers, they would get moving on getting out a diesel F150. Last year I went to the auto show here in Edmonton. I asked the Ford rep that about the diesel F150. I didn't get an answer. What I got instead was him telling me, that was the number one question put to him at the show. He said he wished he had a better answer. When I get my SD serviced I usually get a call from my dealer service rep, asking how they did and how could they improve. I like that. It makes me feel like my business is important to them. Wouldn't it be something to see a section on the Ford website asking the public; "what do you want us to build & how could we do it better."

Government regulations also play apart on when they can bring a product to the
market.

They play a part on what they can bring to the market as far as safety, emissions, and to a lesser extent, fuel economy is concerned.

Who cares?
There'll be so many emission strangling power-robbing gadgets on the thing that'll rob it of mpg anf hp you'll be better off buying a gasser.

I can tell you I won't care... but the people in marketing and sales might, as the masses stampede their way into a Ford dealership...

The diesels used in the Landcruiser however (currently 4.2l turbo I6 - soon to be a 4.5l single and twin turbocharged V8)
The new V8 is expected to have around 480lbfts of torque, and about 280hp in twin turbocharged form (about 10% less in single)

Having worked on and tested a Puegeot diesel ,a 4 cylinder variant with turbo that is built by Ford and getting to drive a variant in a Puegeot wagon, I can say I am very impressed. The engine is smooth ,quiet, and has spunk. The fact that it can rev to 5200 rpm makes it feel like a gas engine with lots of torque.
The 4.4l V8 should be impressive if it has this rpm capability, and this quiet demeanor.
