i picked up a pair of shorty mustang headers today, but i think i got a set of dual exhaust ones by mistake (from a cobra or a gt). it seems like it, anyways. the headers go back and point toward the back left panel of the truck on the left (drivers) side...whereas they should go down and to the right, to the y-pipe.
so the thing is, if i put these headers on and they dont bolt to the y-pipe i'll have to cut the y-pipe and weld a little extension on it to make it match the header. only problem is, i dont have a welder. so i take it to a muffler shop, right?
ok, here's my question - will it hurt the truck to drive it a few miles with no tail pipe / muffler / cat? i know it'll be louder'n anything, but will it actually hurt the engine to have no back pressure?
It will most likely hurt your ears and possibly your wallet if the local constabulary is nearby when you drive it. But for a short trip to the exhaust shop, it shouldn't hurt anything. I wouldn't drive too far like that you never know what the hot exhaust may be hitting as it leaves the headers. Watch for things that could be heat damaged like wiring harnesses and the like. O2 sensor and wiring runs down back there.
