CT Registration

Hi Folks, I live in CT and plan to buy a F350 CC/SB soon to tow my camper, since the truck is 11,200 GVWR, I hope I'm not forced to register it commercial. I really want to ride the Merit parkway legally.

Anybody know or find what the CT regulations say about trucks being considered a passenger vehicle (or combo)?. I've search the DMV-CT website and cannot find anything.

Legally you can not take SD on the Merrit Parkway. The weight limit on the Merrit is 7500lb GVW, so your not even close. That being said, I take mine on the parkway all the time. Note it has combo plates on it

I believe over 26,000 pounds you would have to register it with commercial plates. You will get combo plates and as said, the parkway is a no, no. I to, run the parkway all the time with my truck and have luckily never had a problem.

The last few times I needed info I had great luck calling the DMV and asking the questions I needed answered. Wait time was down and I must have gotten lucky with the person I spoke with.

Good luck with the new Ford.

You shouldn't need to do anything. As long it still has whatever it was manufactured with and is safe for the road you're all set. Just get your paperwork together and go to DMV and get some plates. Shouldn't need to be inspected either. At least the last couple vehicles I registered over 10 yrs. old didn't need to be.

I thought the gvw was 10,000lb.... my f350 is 10k gvw and I had to tell the DMV officer i wasnt going to use it for any sort of business / commercial work. He even asked if i was sure its 10,000 and not more.

"I believe over 26,000 pounds you would have to register it with commercial plates" - are you thinking CDL?

Yup it's 10,000 lbs. At that point up to 26,001 lbs it is considered a Medium-duty truck. The fine is really steep for being on a parkway, I believe it is like $5,000 or more. But that really depends on the trooper. I'll have to ask the DMV Inspector friend I have through work.
