89 ranger 2.9l with a mind of its own!!

Hey guys, my ranger decided to show its feminine side and start throwing fits the other day. It starts and idles fine but while driving down the road it acts just like you turn the key off then right back on again, and at the same time the check engine light comes on. I have replaced the fuel filter and the fuel pump relay since this started but no luck. By chance could it be the EEC relay?? I dont have the code or codes at this time, I havent trusted it to make it into town. Any thoughts or ideas will be greatly apprieciated.

I had my fuel pump relay go bad, sort of, last year. I thought I was stranded 30 miles from home, but i realized that the EEC relay and Fuel Pump relay had the same part number! I swapped them and She started right up. If a relay is going to fail its going to FAIL. What happened to me was a pure fluke, cuz the next day there wasnt a thing I could do to get it to start, at least I was home where I could properly work on it. BTW What year and engine is your ranger? Mines a 94 3.0L.

Mine is a 89 with a 2.9l out of a 87. Also the relays for the fuel and the EEC are different on mine. The locating tab are on opposite corners, Tried that one already. It runs and drives but continuously acts up so I dont trust going further then chain distance from home. LOL

ya I hear you on that. Even if the tab is different along with part number or whatever, the only difference between any 12 volt relay is one of 2 things. Amperage rating, and the pin locations/shape. Have you tried replacing the EEC relay yet? Relays are cheap enough, worth a shot.

Since it's an 89 you can pull the codes with a paper clip, the codes are the best place to start and the paper clip is cheaper than replacing good parts.

Not wanting to hijack, but hey Ken!!! Hope you're doing great.

The instructions for the paperclip method he mentioned can be found in the tech sticky at the top of the Ranger forum.
