Thumbs up

It would have been interesting to say the least,, not to mention how much of a ******* I feel like right now,, sheesh. I've done a million and one timing chain replacements and gear drives in the past and here I go messing up advice for the poor guy... Wait,, I know,, I'll blame it on the dog, it was his fualt, he farted and the smell clouded my judgement forcing me to type fast in effort to leave the room,, Yeah that's it.

My dog just bit me over that whole thing. Apparently he understood that I say it's his fault but he seems to disagree. lmao

Very interesting that I found this topic...

I'm fixing to have to do a water pump replacement on my 1992 F-150 5.8L, and while I'm in there, I want to go ahead and replace the timing kit since the truck has over 220k on it.

I found the Pete Jackson Noisy Gear Drives at Summit, and I'm VERY interested in putting one on my 351. I've done numerous timing chain replacements in the past, but never a gear drive.

It says it comes with complete instructions, so surely they will be adequate. The only thing I'm curious of is-- How much machining has to be done to the block and/or timing cover? If it's a big PITA, I'll just get a double-roller chain.

Thanks, ya'll!

If your motor's got that many miles on it, a gear drive is a huge waste of money. Just go swap in a quality double row, roller chain set. It'll out last the rest of the engine. I just bought a new Cloyes, True Roller set at the local O'Reilly's for my 331, price tag was $20. Works as well as the $80 Ford Racing set that it replaced that also needed a $40 steel cam retainer plate to work with it. That set's been in three engine builds now, but still works like new.

I plan on rebuilding the motor in the next couple of years, so the gear drive can just be swapped over to the new build, along with the water pump and whatever else I can salvage.

None, just a trimming of the inside of the timing cover, at least my early one did. I did it with a dremel and a small cut off wheel.

Thanks, RacinNdrummin. I take it that not much meat has to be ground out of the cover, then?
